Of those listed, I would say Imagine.
But I think that the greatest rock ballad ever is Baba O'Riley by The Who.

Damn right...that song rocks the fuckin' world. I've got the old vinyl Who's Next LP. Throw that fucker on the turntable, blast Baba O'Riley 'til the neighbors complain, then play Won't Get Fooled Again as an encore. ;)

Alone, These Dreams, All I Wanna Do, and Stranded by Heart are all amazing songs. Ann Wilson is the absoulute best rock singer. (Male or Female).
Malibu by Hole (we dont just mean 80s rock ballads right?)
Songbird, You Make Loving Fun and Say That You Love Me by Fleetwood Mac
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King
Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin
none of those (except Heart) are traditional rock ballads but great rock love songs nonetheless.

Anyone know any songs that are epic? Big songs that tell a story but are still great and clever. Like stairway to heaven. It tells a story and is clever and epic at the same time. Anyone know any songs like that?

Not sure if i know any songs that are THAT long but there's one i like called "What About Me?" from the band Moving Pictures.
Also, not quite sure but the whole CD "Operation:Mindcrime" from Queensryche is one long story about a guy's love for Sister Mary who get brainwashed into doing things for the revolution.

Well, I was in Junior High School(that's right, not middle school) in the late 70's. Every school dance started with...
Kiss: Rock and Roll all nite(got things heated up)
Every dance ended with (while you hurried to find a chic to slow dance with)...
Led Zepplin: Stairway to Heaven(gave you a shot at scorin' afterward)

It's still a little more mellow than Quiet Riot, plus i'm going with the words to the song, that's how i determin what's considered a "ballad";) Quiet Riot is great but i think "The Wild & The Young" is more of a ballad from them (another great song!!).
Blur - Beatlebum
Blur - Song 2
Queen - Raido Ga Ga
Reo Speedwagon - Can't fight this feeling
I guess Stairway to Heaven is an obvious choice.
November Rain by GnR is as well.
Some might laugh at this, but I think Poisons Something to Believe in and Every Rose has it's Thorn are two pretty good ballads as well.
