View Full Version : Pics of the Halloween Crestwood Childrens book

I was playing with my digital camera and thought I'd share some pics of the Crestwood House (publisher) "Halloween" childrens book from 1991. The book uses an H4 cover photo for some odd reason but the book is the story of H1 told in a simpler form for younger readers. The story is illustrated with scenes from H1...a very, very hard to find book......................Larry

Aw man, that is AWESOME! I love the way the book looks like inside; it seems they chose some great pictures. This is terrific for those of us who always wanted to take a peek at this rare Halloween gem. Thanks for showing us, Larry!

Hey Larry, that book looks pretty interesting...I read the first page and could hardly stop...would have loved to read this book from the front cover to the back cover....looks soo cool, I love the pics inside. :)

What parent would read that to their kid? Seems strange to me.

I guess it's rather for teenagers at the age of 12 to read it themselves...why not?

Cool, I've never see one( obviously because it's rare) but I'd like to get my hands on one, just a neat piece of memoribilia.

Well, if its for teens then never mind.

But I think it would be irresponsible for a parent to let there child read it, or even watch the movie. But it depends.

Have you seen any video games or even watched tv in the last 10 years?? Halloween is tame compared to images readily available anywhere now.....

Um yeah, but I still wouldn't give a child a Halloween storybook.

The series appears to be aimed at older kids and their reading comprehension level.

That book was released in 1991 over 14 years ago. By today's standards, yes, that's tame, but back then was still the Marios, Zeldas and Sonics. Way before the Mortal Kombats.

I agree it shouldn't have been a library book or accesible to children. Children of any age would be curious. I think it's better for the parent to make the choices, but the parent can't always do that when something is so freely accesible. I was 15 when I saw my first Halloween on the big screen (4) and had seen the previous films on video and TV a couple of years before that.

There was a big debate over whether an 11 year old could see it, but I won't rehash that here. On topic, larry, I'm curious, is this a recent addition (this past year or so) or have you had this for many years?

Reason I asked is because I saw it on eBay a long time ago and missed out on it, but if you (or someone else here) got it then I can live with that. If it was not bid on, means it's still out there. Just curious which is the case.

I picked this up last year, but not from eBay. I got it from searching the 'net and scored it for less than 5 bucks! I've looked for the others in the series to no luck. Crestwood House produced that killer set of Universal monster books back in the late 70's and early 80's that older members probably remember checking out of the library.
I wish I had seen the copy on Ebay...I might have picked that one up as well....this book is very rare, and is actually one of the very first produced Halloween items.............................Larry

Awesome book, Larry-New!! :)

I found my copy on Amazon for like $8 shipped...and it's certainly rarer than the standard Paper Back tie-in novels(which are practically given away these days on eBay) lol

I had my copy of the Crestwood book signed by "Tommy Doyle" at the H25--which makes the book so much the better :)

:( I've always wanted one, Larry. Thanks for the "inside" pics.

MyersFan75

That is pretty cool.
Sure wish I had a copy - maybe I'll search Amazon or somewhere else later.

I am just curious but how "tame" is it compared to the original novel and film.
Since it is supposedly toned down, what are the differences in the story and content?

Thanks,
MyersFan75

I just skimmed through the book and unbelievably, the kills are not watered down at all! The deaths are described in detail and are just as in the film. I must agree that this book would not be for kids....Bob's death is exactly as filmed. The author details how the knife pinned him to the wall..........Larry

Weird.
I thought it was toned down much more for younger readers and was just used as a scary tale.
I noticed that it also has versions of Jaws and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

With so much interest in this book I thought I would post a few more pics..these show how this book is remarkably not censored for the young 'uns. I was actually shocked when I read it.......Larry

Larry, as soon as you posted these new pictures, I realized that this book would be the perfect reading material next to the window on a rainy night. One night you should read it cover to cover!

Approx. how many pages are there? I think it would be cool to try making a similar type of book for Halloween II, just for fun. Then I can post it on the board for everyone to read or something.

larry-new
06-02-2005, 03:56 PM
The story section of the book is 40 pages but a good number of those are photos...so the actual story pages probably 25 or so. There are a few pages of "making of" at the end. I plan on reading it soon...perhaps I'll shoot pics of the whole book and download 'em on discs. I can then give 'em to you guys so you can read it too.
Guys let me know if there would be any interest in having a "virtual copy" of this book.......................Larry

Certain things are taken out like Annie's car being locked.
Dialoque is a bit different and it feels much faster but still not the best for younger readers.

No I don't think I can. My computer is having problems with memory issues. Everytime I try to put anything on my computer it says not enough space is avaliable. I don't know how to clear space on the computer and no one I ask seems to be able to help either. I will work on it though and try.

Score!!

I was able to find one of these gems on ebay this week in a lot that also included the Nightmare on Elm Street, Critters and Jaws books from the Crestwood series. I cannot believe I finally got this!! I saw this thread a while ago and set off trying to find this book. The hunt is finally over for me! The condition is almost perfect for all four books. No writing, or other blemishes at all. Here is the listing I found it in:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170652612383&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

You can see the bottom four books are the "Tales of Terror" books. $12.99 with shipping - unbelievable. I don't think the seller knew what he had.

I remember coming across that book series years ago. I was disappointed that they opted for the Halloween 4 Shape image on the cover. I'm pretty sure that the Freddy's Revenge Krueger was on the Nightmare on Elm Street book in the series, too.
