Scream 2 and 3 cannot even be compared.

the original is the only truly good movie to me (lets not forget that im the resident Rose Mcgowan fan), with the sequels getting a "once or twice a year" watch.

If I wanted to be a cool dude and keep my pride, I would say the original. However, I seem to re-watch Scream 2 more. I might like Scream 2 the best then ...

Prefer the original, it was the only one that actually got me scared the first time i saw it, the sequels were just comedies in disguise.

You can't blame the Scream series for that. Blame the brainless execs at studios who want to make carbon copies.

I can see Chomp's point in disliking them 'cause they were the source of the modern day horror "problem", but they weren't the cause of the problem (like ten31 said). It's the people who made the movies afterwards, that just basically wanted to copy the Scream movie's sucess.

It's just like blaming the trees for a forest fire.

I liked the original the best....the original in most movie series' are usually the best cuz it's the first time that particular style or type of story has been done, and in horror they tend to use a very similar story in every sequel.

i chose the first one because there is just something about seeing the first movie of a series when it is better than you expect. i thought it would be ok but not as good as it was. so i had a great time in the theatre lol the second i like almost as much as the first but the third kinda let me down.

I like the original most...especially the first 10 minutes or so. Drew made that film! :D

I also love being able to see my cousin in the scene right before Sidney hits Gale Weathers "Bam, bitch went down!"...LOL. She got to play an extra amongst a crowd of people...so she is a red dot that flashes by on the screen...woohoo, cheap thrills :D

As for 2 and 3, I don't care for them all that much but they do have their moments and are fun to watch every now and then. I am considering buying the box set though since it is only $15...dirt cheap for 4 discs!

I'm a huge fan of the Scream series but Scream is undoubtedly the best of the trilogy. Scream 2 and 3 were good, but they couldn't match the level of its predecessor. True, it did give birth to some rather cheap uninspired knockoffs, but Halloween did the same thing, and none of them are remembered as fondly as the original. I like to place Scream alongside Wes Craven's New Nightmare and In the Mouth of Madness as some of the truly innovative, groundbreaking horror films to rise out of the wasteland that was the early- to mid-90s horror market.

Scream works so beautifully, with parts of it nearing perfection; the opening sequence is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking and, as has been rightly observed, would work wonderfully as a self-contained short film. Anchored by Drew Barrymore's bravura performance as a teenager trapped in a battle of horror movie trivia with a psycho on a cell phone just outside her living room window, this section takes the audience on a hair-raising, seat-clutching ride from humour to terror to bloody, violent death. Unfortunately, this sequence sets a standard of effectiveness that the rest of the film doesn't really live up to. Not to say I didn't love the rest of the film, with its endless horror movie allusions, clever touches, and sarcastic zingers aimed at popular culture.

One thing I was never clear on though was the constant labelling of this film as "parody": the point of a parody is to subvert the thing being parodied, to highlight its weaknesses in such a way that the target being parodied can no longer be looked at in quite the same way. Done with finesse, an accurate satire should at least put a major dent into the genre it parodied. Instead, Scream revived the slasher genre, with the market being flooded with rip-offs and carbon-copies throughout the rest of the 90s. For, instead of subverting the rules of horror, Scream is actually an affirmation of them.

But the only thing that truly bothers me about Scream isn't its callous attitude to bloody death and destruction, but its attitude toward sex. Sidney spends most of her screen-time agonizing over whether to Do It or not, and phrases it in such a manner ("sexually anorexic") that I found quite irresponsible: that teenage girls have an obligation to put out, and if they don't in a considerable amount of time, they can expect to be dumped for someone who will.

Also, before heaping praise on Scream for its "progressive" sexual attitudes, it would be well to consider the story surrounding the rape and murder of Maureen Prescott. We soon learn, however, that the rape may not have happened, that there's talk of other infidelities. Thus, while Sidney might escape with her life despite having sex, her mother is not so fortunate. Rather, she has been brutally punished for what is considered to be inappropriate sexual conduct - just like all those other women in all those other "non-progressive" slasher films. And there is something else even more distasteful about the handling of the Maureen Prescott subplot. Initially, Sidney is, naturally enough, thoroughly traumatised by her mother's fate. It is when she finds out that Maureen wasn't raped, that she had been having affairs, that she starts getting over it. The inference here seems to be that, since Maureen was "bad," the fact that she was tortured and killed isn't such a big deal - not as big as it would be if she'd been "good" or "pure" - and therefore it isn't something that Sidney needs to go on being so traumatized about. That Sidney reacts to the knowledge of her mother's infidelities by deciding to have sex herself strikes me as a little odd; even odder is that when she prefaces the act by admitting that she's terrified of becoming "just like her," she means she's scared of being labelled a slut; not of ending up a mutilated corpse which, under the circumstances, would seem the more likely outcome.

I apologize for the long rant; there were just certain aspects of Scream I had been noticing for quite awhile that were becoming more and more apparent with each viewing.

i like the first film the most. scream 2 was a good follow up, and scream 3 is watchable but it was going a little far w/ the whole thing. i enjoy them all, but the first two are the only ones that i have any interest in owning. it could have ended at the first one for all i care. sorry if my opinions offended anyone, but that is just how i feel.

I think Scream is the kind of movie that shouldn't have had a sequel. The sequels to scream basically duplicated it and added nothin new (besides new killers). The original was the best because it pretty much revived slashers and had a cool story, the sequels sucked.

I thought the Scream trilogy was great. The three movies brought the story full circle, rather than just saying, "Oh, here's the infamous killer back for some more victims" (i.e. Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, & yes, Halloween).

Isn't this what many of us dislike the most in regards to the Halloween franchise? The lack of continuity?

At least Scream was able to tie everything together. I thought it was very well done. The original was, without question, my favorite. Following that would be the third installment. And then the second one would be last. I thought the whole motive for Mickey was lame (but I still liked the movie).

Like it or not, Scream brought a little life back into the horror genre, and that's a good thing IMO.

I thought Scream 2 was kind of bland as well. It felt a bit more like the rip offs that followed Scream than an actual sequel to Scream.

With that said, I thought Scream 3 was pretty good. I liked the Hollywood angle and of course two of my favorite movie characters make an awesome cameo together.

I liked the triliogy. I thought they were all good and had some subtle funny moments.

The first one is hands down the best. The 2nd one is good to, but pretty much pointless. I didn't like it at first but it has grown on me over the yrs. The reason I say it's pointless is because it basically just drug and had nothing to do with the story...which is what they wanted and it was a pretty good film.

The 3rd I thought was good but kind of complicated. It worked out nice though with the backstory.

The first one is definitely the best. I think it's a classic. A truly amazing film. A masterpiece. There's just so much to be said about it.

Scream 2 was good. Scream 3 was okay. I like all of them. One thing I noticed though. I was watching the box set the other day, and even though the third movie is okay, it really kind of ruins the events of the first film for me. I really don't like the idea that it was Roman who was doing it all I liked it much better when it was Billy and Stu's idea from the beginning
