View Full Version : Donald Pleasence best performance in a Halloween movie?

I did a check first because i thought there might have been a thread on this topic already. But i checked & it came up with nothing. So here goes

From the following Halloween movies above.Which 1 would you consider to be the best performance from Donald Pleasence as the Dr Sam Loomis character?.

Now i'm pretty sure Loomis always gave his best when portraying Dr Loomis.

However in saying that maybe there is a Halloween movie that stands out more to you because of his performance.

cheers

I still say Halloween 1 Extended Edition....I love the scene with the doctors begging them to move Michael to a maximum security facility. Plus his little speaches to Brackett throughout the movie were cool.

Fixed. :) I also changed the votes to the extended since I assume the three who posted in here are the three that voted for Halloween (but wanted Extended Version).

I'd have to agree, the extended version gave us more time with his character. We see the desperation and his insight before it all began.
But Halloween II comes in a very close second, I love the emotion he puts on display. He's flabbergasted that Michael has escaped. His suspicions are becoming reality before his own eyes- Michael isn't a man...

For me it's a toss up between the Halloween Extended version, and Halloween II, for all the reasons most everyone here has said.

The best performance with Donald Pleasence would be Halloween and Halloween II.

sorry guys, but i had to go with h5 on this one. loomis was really over the edge in this one as he teetered on the brink of insanity. i also like the love-hate relationship loomis had with jamie. i think DP played the part perfectly.

Halloween 1 extended gets my vote. His performance in H1m is great. All the scene with him in the extended is even better.

Id have to go with the original and I guess the extended versio since there was an extra scene of him. No beating the first.

So hard to choose. But I'll pick the Extended Edition because there is such a magnitude of compassion in his character, seen from beginning to end. Three of the most notable scenes are when Loomis is talking to the two doctors at the clinic, when he is arguing with Dr. Wynn outside of the hospital, and him explaining Michael to Brackett outside the Myers house. Donald was such a talented actor who could act as if he actually was each person, and his role as Dr. Loomis is no exception. He delivers a top-notch performance in each of his Halloween movies. And despite how people feel about him in H5, I thoroughly enjoyed him in that one.

Extended version of course. I love the last scene of Part 4 however, that gets an honorable mention.

I went with the Halloween extended version.
It's hard to decide because he really didn't have a bad performence in any of the movies. Some thought he was a bit hammy in H5, but I think he did a great job of portraying someone on the verge of losing it.

In part one he had the best script to follow, but that doesn't make his performance any less in the other movies. I really liked watching him beat down Mikey with that hunk of wood in part four. But yeah, I think his performance was always at its best, but he had something better to peform to with part one.

H1 is a given. I think the Loomis character is really the number one character in H2 and Pleasence gives a great performance. At that point everyone knows Loomis was right and are looking to him for guidance to find and stop Myers. A lot of the plot revolves around Loomis in H2. He was really good in H4 too. I especially like it when he's picked up by that "old preacher" guy and at one point Loomis smiles and is amused. Loomis has quite a journey in H4. Loomis was too crazy in H5, but Pleasence played crazy well. I liked H6, but the Loomis character didn't have a cool send off. And Loomis is just dead in H20, but cool voice over during credits. 1st time that gave me chills and almost a tear to my eyes.

I'd say 4, I liked his performance best. Especially at the end with "No! No!" and he points his gun.

But I also love his in the TV Cut of 1. With his "I am begging you to reconsider."

I went with HalloweeN 4. To me, that movie is all Loomis. He is the major tie to the first two besides Michael and I think he played his best role of the series in this.

Mark Warner

Pleasence's performance in the original is, by far, the best. The way he seemed completely obsessed with stopping Michael yet he never went overboard. He remained calm throughout the entire film (the one scene at Smith's Grove with Wynn was the only instance of him shouting angrily because of Michael in the film).

I truely believe Donald Pleasence should have won some sort of award for his performance as Loomis in the original Halloween. It just goes to show that most of Hollywood doesn't know shit.

Only 1, because of his raw and fresh intro to the character. He was someone you could identify with back in those times.

"Come here lil' kid, I got some candy for you"...(Psycho Stranger),
was being shove down our throats at the time.

He gave you some of "that".

Along with "he's soulful enough to take a swig out his paperbag, because he means you no-harm... down-to-earth-dude.

I chose the extended cut, for obvious reasons as far as Donald is concerned- he is perfect as Loomis! But in choosing between Halloween and Halloween: Extended Cut, I chose the extended cut because I feel the movie is better in that cut- if it could get any better. I love the scenes added with Loomis, and even the little bit with Lynda and Laurie about that damn blouse. Classic.

I would defintely give DP a scary award for H-5. His portrayal of Dr. Loomis was absolutly brilliant. This was a Loomis bordering on the edge of absolute insanity himself in his never ending persistence of destroying his foe. You can see the obsessive maddness oozing from him in most every scene. Dr. Loomis is charged with an energy in this movie that his aging body can scarcly contain and is through trying to reason with anyone and is a man on mission who will run over anyone who gets in the way of HIS prey, some dude named Micheal Myers. The best part is the thumpin' ol' Dr. L lays down on MM, which is just as brutal as anything MM could ever throw at ya! DP was playin' his A game and then some, which makes this performance legendary. DP lives on forever through a Doctor named Loomis.

I'l' never forget when I was very young I stayed up wayyy late past by bedtime and watched "Halloween" on TV.

I'll never forget it.

To say this film, and I even liked 2 just as much (I snuck into a theatre LOL to see it) ... nothing has scared me so much.

Donald Pleasance, a man I had never heard of at my young age at the time; was the most fighteningly real part of the films.

He had a passion for what he knew, and was the key character that 'did know what it was' and everyone else was ignorant of what was happening or not believing it was possible.

His words to the Police Officer in H1 - while in the Myers House in the room where he murdered his sister scared the crap outta me (and was the defining point in the film to me).

"This is not a man" ... that key line caught me like a fish is hooked. What is 'it' then, how did this happen - and more so "why?".

At the ending sequence when Laurie is exhausted, Michael shot off the balcony - and she asks "what's the boogeyman" - and Mr. Pleasance brilliantly played that scene said "as a matter of fact, 'it' was" ... queue music... he looks and as he expected he can't be killed and has moved on ...

The sinister feel of this film set the tone for what is the most terrifying and plausible horror film ever.

John Carpenter's music which is 'beyond a soundtrack, but an anthem', and his script defined 'horror' at that point : the fact that this was not a human, it was in fact the devil on earth - and immortal with being void of feeling.

No one, and no other movie(s) have captured the 'deepest cut' (pun intended) to the movie industry's view of what will scare people that could be jaded from past or future films.

There was no explanation - he just kills, with a passion - and can not be stopped... the idea of immortality scares most people, let alone when it is attached to the mind and body of a serial killer... and his reign as king of horror began and will not likely end soon.

I do support a film in the 'vs.' idea - if not "Pinhead" then "Jason".

This is quite possible - even though the two are from different studios... I'll give you one example - "Titanic". It took two studios to afford and merge their empires to make a film that made huge money (Universal and 20th Century Fox). These are realitively small companies in comparison and if both would see huge returns, pitting Michael Vs. Jason - to me - would be the right film to make in my opinion.

Of course we know who would win ... no one, BUT the battle would be extreme, hateful and extremely popular for the fans of horror films and bring the icons together.

If it ever will be Michael vs. Pinhead - alas the same thing would happen - I'd suggest a relative of Loomis finds the box, knows it could possibly stop Michael - open it - and throw it at him : and the games would begin. In the end, both would prove indestructable but that same person would realise they after the fight have become stronger as one - finds a way to get the cenobytes back in the box, to stop the 'deadly romance'.

They are the slashers - both seemingly immortal - but Michael is not an angry child - he is a demon.

Hope you enjoyed my 1st post - you guys are awesome!

Jason.

:)
