Okay, rising up from the ashes of the UHMB, this is the return of the thread whose purpose is to discuss all things ACO-related. The book, the movie...it's all fair game.

Let the discussion commence, O my brothers.

This movie was funny as hell. Certainly a fresh concept for it's time. I could never watch the rape scene though when I was younger, that shit disturbed's me. But yeah, this movie was great.

I've never seen this film, nor have I ever read the book. My cousin Vince has read it though, and told me a bit about it. I was already sliiiiightly familiar with it though since EOTL was telling me about it one late night.

I honestly need to watch the movie, or read the damn book. All I hear are good things about this title. :D

Fuck... I wish I started this thread

Anyways, I'm a major fan of both the film (Malcolm McDowell + Stanley Kubrick = Masterpiece) and the book (Anthony Burgess doesnt consider it his best work... he couldnt be more wrong about himself)...

I quoted this every day in school and I even tried slovoing the old nadsat now and again, O my brothers...

Perhaps not Burgess's finest work (that honor may go to The Wanting Seed), but certainly his most renowned and influential. It's still one of my all time favorite books.

LMAO! I knew you'd say that, Chuckie. I thought of you as soon as I saw this.

Malcolm was sexy as hell as a baddie, and it was a very interesting, yet disturbing, film. I got teared up when Alex was sobbing in the chair, saying, "I've suffered, I've suffered..."

And I'll never be able to listen to "Singin' In The Rain" the same way again.

It's pretty funny how he only has very few lines in the whole movie (actually... he only says "Right" twice)... because he has quite a lot of quotes in the book and unlike the movie, he meets Alex again after the Ludovico treatment and his cure!

If, as you said, the film had been seriously built up by your friend, that no doubt contributed to your lack of awe. I hate it when people hype something up until it can't meet the expectation, regardless of its merits. ACO does, however, deserve its ranking on AFI's 100 Greatest Films list, I think. Despite its divergence from the source material (which was, frankly, much better), Kubrick's film is brilliantly realized from a stylistic point of view. And he really pushed the envelope with the scenes of brutality. Despite the artificiality of much of the "futuristic" design (or perhaps as a result, in direct contrast to it), the realism of the violence resonates. And in 1971, it certainly raised a few eyebrows, to say the least. More than anything, I think the film is a milestone. It's one of those films that went further than any previous film had been willing to go. And, in all fairness, one tends to miss quite a bit on the first viewing. In fact, I watched it several times before I realized how funny it was. But all that said, the book is ultimately superior to the film.

That would be milk (obviously) plus drencrom, or vellocet, or synthemesc. In other words, it's milk with drugs in it. Now, in the movie, Alex says they were drinking moloko drencrom...milk with drencrom in it. However, in the book, it is stated that they were drinking milk "with knives in it"...in other words, with some particular drug (or blend of drugs) which heighten and focus one's aggression. The book implies that drencrom, vellocet, and synthemesc are more along the lines of psychedelic drugs or narcotics...and most likely Alex and his droogs would not be drinking that. They'd need a strong stimulant, though perhaps one that produces a psychological effect, as well...something, perhaps, along the lines of a fictionalized, futuristic PCP.

Glad you enjoyed the book, droogie. Always nice to be able to turn someone on to truly great literature.

Yeah. Really, with as great as the movie is, it doesn't stand a chance against the book...which, of course, is usually the case. Very few movies can outshine the books they're based on...or even equal them. ACO is a great movie, but it's so vastly different from the book that it's almost as if it's got its own agenda, which is often at odds with Burgess's original theme. It's easy to see why Burgess hated Kubrick's film. It added stylistically to the story, but it altered or omitted so much in regards to the actual storyline that it pales in comparison to the power of the original novel.

i read some of it before but got sidetracked by other things. then i picked it up yesterday and read straight through it. i had to use the dictionary at first to understand some of the words but after awhile i could hear myself saying them outloud.

EvilOnTwoLegs
10-20-2004, 05:20 AM
Yeah. After a while, the language begins to seem normal. I didn't have the glossary when I first read the book, so I had to go by context...then I'd write down each word and what the context suggested. Then I'd use the list as reference if I got stuck later on. But surprisingly, once you get about a third of the way in, you can read it without problems...you almost stop noticing the nadsat words and just learn to automatically translate them.

If the book weren't as good as it is, it would probably be hell to trudge through the weird hybrid dialect...but the story is compelling and the pacing keeps you moving, so beyond the initial distraction of the unfamiliar words, the invented language doesn't pose a problem.

Unfortunately, that's what ruins a lot of movies. Too much hype, thus people have too high of expectations. 9-1/2 times out of 10, it ruins the film for them.

I'm gonna give it a read then. Literature ain't so bad, and I've been turned on to it ever since our pal martyr introduced me to Chuck Palahniuk. But I don't know if this was asked and answered...what should I do first? Watch the movie or read the book? I remember I picked up Wiseguy before watching Goodfellas and was amazed at how beautifully the scenery was brought to life. So what sounds best?

Right...and his prison time is completely neglected. He goes to prison, helps out the chaplain, volunteers for the treatment, and gets realeased...and that's it. It doesn't get into the day to day torment that a 15 year old faces amongst hardened criminals...or the squalid, overcrowded conditions. That's important information because it explains why Alex would volunteer for a treatment that might get him an early release...even if it's an experimental treatment that literally fucks with his brain.

As always, I recommend reading the book first. It really gives you a better understanding of the movie.

10-21-2004, 04:38 AM
actually i going to contradict eotl. i would say see the movie first, so at least you can get the idea of the scenery and how well alex was portrayed in the flick. then read the book and see the differences. but if you do it this way you have to do it within a small amount of time between the viewing and reading so the images are fresh in your mind. then the differences will be crystal clear and make you love the book so much more.

Interesting way to look at it. I recommended my way for essentially the same reason. As an artist myself, I like to create the world in my own head through reading...then watching the movie, I can see someone else's take on it, and compare it to my own vision.

10-22-2004, 05:32 AM
i love watching movies and hearing about this i had to see it. now i hear alot of people always say the book is better for practically every flick. but there was so much push on this book that i had to read it. see for me if there is a book and a movie, i'll take the easy way out and watch the flick instead then maybe i might read the book.

i don't want to go off on a tangent but i'll make it quick. i don't like reading. it bores me to death. it's not the create your own thoughts of the scenery and the story, cuz i love doing that, but just looking at the same font over and over again. my eyes get tired and bored. that's why i'd watch the flick instead. and also you will never know what the author is thinking cuz what you think is the idea could be totally wrong. that's another reason why i watch the flick instead. i know it's not made my the author most times but at least it gives me a ballpark idea.

Quick rundown...London, the near future. Violence and crime among youth gangs is rampant. Decent people generally don't leave their homes after dark anymore. A teenage boy named Alex and his gang engage in various acts of brutality...raping and pillaging 'til Alex gets caught. In prison, he's experimented on with a new treatment designed to cure him of his violent impulses. In 14 days, he's released...but is he cured? And if he is, can he survive? And in the end, is it worse to be evil by choice...or to be good by force?

In prison, he's experimented on with a new treatment designed to cure him of his violent impulses. In 14 days, he's released...but is he cured? And if he is, can he survive? And in the end, is it worse to be evil by choice...or to be good by force?
Sounds pretty cool. Thanx.

You can't vote if you're not an American citizen, just like I couldn't vote at one of your elections.

Any-hoo. Back to Alex and his droogs. I'd rather talk about that right now. I had a real shitty day.

You forgot Dr. Strangelove. ;) Not to mention some of his earlier work...the Killing, Killer's Kiss, Paths of Glory. No doubt that Kubrick was one of the best directors of the 20th century...along with Hitchcock, Scorsese, Bergman, and Polanski.

There are some true believers out there who say that it was intentional, and meant to illustrate that "Grady" had always been at the Overlook, and always would be...just like Jack. He takes different forms throughout the years, but he's always the same character, basically. Hence, Charles Grady and Delbert Grady. Then again, it could just be a cock-up.

Truly horrorshow, yes. Actually, I'm sure you know this, but Kubrick liked that brunette and he was starting to get jealous with that scene.

Truly horrorshow, yes. Actually, I'm sure you know this, but Kubrick liked that brunette and he was starting to get jealous with that scene.

I can sympathise with ol' Stan... Malcolm's cocky attitude (excellent choice of words, there) with the girls must have pissed him off, although Kubrick was infamously pissed 24/7

WHA--?!?! He plays the LEAD role! Speaking of Malc'... I was flicking through the movie channels and stumbled across this film called Just Visiting it had Jean "Leon" Reno and the lovely Christina Applegate... so I watched. Anyways, to cut a long story short, hes stuck in the future and needs a wizard to go back to his time. And good ol' McDowell pops up every now and then as that wizard... hes hardly in it but everytime he pops up, hes hilarious! I'll stop ranting and just suggest you see it... pretty damn good...

I just finished the movie. What did i think of it? I absolutely LOVED it! A big 10 out of 10. Contrary to some the hype from the film stayed and didnt boil over. Its just one of those rare movies that i've seen that clicked in my head. Its already a favorite and its been 10 minutes since i've finished watching it. I took the same route Atomic took, movie first. But i'm actually already started on the book. Well into chapter 4 now and the movie definantly helped me. I can picture it all in my head while reading it.

One thing about the movie that i would of liked to see was more time with Georgie, Dim and Pete. Everything else is great. Malcolm McDowell is a brilliant actor. He potrayed Alex wonderfully. The smirk on his face was always funny. What else to say? I'll be buying the movie. I'll be finishing the book. Thanks Comander Chuck D. for getting me into this awesome story. Bit cold and pointless... :p

Ok... lets set a topic of discussion and change it ever two or three days;

Book Vs. Film

Very, very, VERY tough choice... but after some time making up my rassoodock... I opted for the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece. Reason? The film beautifully brings the excellent book to life in every sense. If it werent for the film, the book wouldnt have been so effective. Mainly due to Kubrick's direction and McDowell's amazing portrayal of Alex. Although, I have to admit; after viewing the film for the first time and reading the book again (which I was pretty confused with to begin with), I enjoyed it reeeeeeal horrorshow. Two masterpieces actually...

Annie
11-25-2004, 02:46 PM
This is an easy choice for me. The movie! Why? Because I haven't read the book yet.

I'm still trying to get my hands on a copy. Guess I'll go to Amazon.

For me, it's the book. I adore Kubrick's film, but I felt that it left out some bits from the book which were really of value to the story. The horrors of life in the old Staja, for instance. This gives little Alex all the motivation he could possibly need to volunteer for a good brain scrambling. And the scenes with the old baboochkas at the Duke of New York were missed, as well...at least by this malchick in particular.

I did enjoy Kubrick's film, but view it almost as a completely separate entity, as the style and tone are somewhat removed from the book. In this respect, perhaps I enjoy both equally. Kubrick's visual sense is incredible and the cinematography is masterful...but, being that I read the book first, and loved it so much, I guess my allegiance lies there.

Really (and don't stone me to death for this, droogie, until you hear me out)...as much as I despise pointless remakes of classic films, I think that Burgess's book in the hands of the right director could make a smashing new film...not so much a remake as simply a new adaptation. If someone went back to Burgess's novel and kept with that, as opposed to remaking Kubrick's film (since no one could fill his shoes), I think something completely different and wonderful could come from it.

If I were to do it, I wouldn't reference Kubrick's film at all, with the exception of one homage...I'd have the gang in the first film Alex watches in the Ludovico sessions dressed the way Alex and his droogs were in Kubrick's film. Beyond that tip of the hat, I'd try to make a film that Anthony Burgess would have approved of, were he still alive (as you are all no doubt aware, he notoriously despised Kubrick's film).

Chuck D
11-26-2004, 09:47 AM
Always horrorshow to read your posts, EOTL. Some of the points you made about certain scenes missing from the movie were probably filmed but not put into the final cut due to time restraints (I'm sure you know of the old man at the library being taken out of the film). I agree that the old Duke Of New York baboochkas should have been in the film (I have no idea if it was filmed or not) because it perfectly emphasises how they get away with their crimes; using them as their alibi. Also, you stated that the Burgess book and Kurbrick film are two seperate pieces, which is true to some extent, I think. Burgess has a very satrical and witty writing ability, which makes the book extremely enjoyable (I remember I read the whole book in about three hours!) and more insight is put into Alex; who is more vicious than the McDowell persona. Kubrick, however, has made the Burgess story his in the film adaption. Many scenes in the movie are undeniably "Kubrick" (the Flatblock Marina, Korova opening shot etc) and after viewing the film; I cant help but picture McDowell doing all the deeds in the book. Which does prove your point that the book seemed like a little unique gem that held up on its own. Before viewing the film, I read the book a little confused because, due to the Nadsat, I couldnt quite grasp it all. This is were the reason for my choice comes in. The Kubrick adaption helped me understand it all; the near-future totalitarion setting, the many themes and subtexts (oppresive government, freedom of choice vs. forced good will, the meaning of the title). Now, you also mentioned that another film adaption in the hands of a capable director would make a horrorshow sinny. Well, like I said before, apart from very few differences (the book's black droog costumes vs. the film's white etc), Kubrick probably did film the scenes we missed so much (the baboochkas, Alex's struggle in the Staja, the killing of the inmate in the cell etc). But sadly, he made sure the cut footage was burned... WHY STANLEY WHY!? I've sneeted many razzes of a real special edition DVD; with deleted scenes, commentary and other veshches that we fans deserve, O my brothers. I'm sure if Kubrick didnt burn them, you'd probably be torn between choosing the book or film as your favourite (I know I would). And the reason Burgess despised the film was mainly to do with his not being paid for it and having to deal with the laughable outrage it caused in the UK back in '71. Both lomticks are truly dva of the bolshiest veshches to come out of the 20th century, my droogs...

I agree most wholeheartedly with many of your sentiments, dear droogie. I certainly wish that the other scenes which Kubrick shot had survived...perhaps the film could then be more fully realized. But Burgess's hatred of the film goes beyond the reasons cited. Surely, the lack of cutter in his carmans had more than a malenky bit to do with his outrage at Kubrick's adaptation, but I believe that his artistic sensibilities were also offended by Kubrick's adapatation, just as he later regretted allowing the early American editions to be published sans denouement. He was also angered that Kubrick refused to stand up for the film, and that he was forced to defend it himself (despite his distaste for it). In addition, he felt that the film was too light on satire and that it might be misinterpreted...and he was right to some extent on this point, as many people to this day fail to understand the film's true meaning. Indeed, the personal animosity toward Kubrick was so deep that in 1987 (as you are probably aware), Burgess staged his own dramatic presentation of ACO, and at the end of Act 2, the following bit of stage direction can be found: "A man bearded like Stanley Kubrick comes on playing, in exquisite counterpoint, Singin' in the Rain on a trumpet. He is kicked off the stage."

But certainly, Tony's biggest complaint against the film was the exclusion of his 21st chapter. As you know, the number 21 signified something specific to Burgess when he was writing the book...and that 21st chapter was the culmination of that symbolic journey toward adulthood and responsibility. It can be said that the 21st chapter defined the moral underpinnings of the entire novel...certainly, Burgess thought so. Kubrick was unaware of this ending when he made his bit of sinny, but after later reading it, said he wouldn't have used it anyway. He found it to be too starry-eyed and optimistic...though it isn't, really...Alex realizes that even if he settles down to a normal life and has children of his own, they too will one day have to face those harsh nadsat years...and all the tolchocking and razrezzing that go along with that. As he says, "and so it would itty on to like the end of the world."

While I love Kubrick's film dearly, I can understand Burgess's righteous hatred of it. And I do believe that a new film adaptation could be of benefit. Kubrick's ACO also lacks the futuristic sense that he so profoundly exhibited in 2001. I love the way the city looks in his ACO, but the fashions (apart from the nadsat gear) are purely early-'70s, which automatically dates the film (which is not a dobby vesch when the film takes place in a future timeframe, droogie, I'm sure you'll agree). Overall, I think a new adaptation (once again, I stress in the hands of a capable director) could be a truly horrorshow vesch. It wouldn't be better than Kubrick's film (it shouldn't try to be)...but if done properly, it wouldn't have to be worse, either...just different, if you viddy my point. ;)

Really, it is difficult for me to choose between the book and the film (and I should hope that I'd never have to choose). After all, I believe that both works are different in so many ways (though mostly in the way that the book is concretely Burgess's vision and the film is concretely Kubrick's) that I can scarcely compare them. Each has its own life, and there are things about each that are brilliant in their own way.

...which is how I view the matter, O my brother. :D

That's it! I propose we make our own adaption... surely we can live up to the other fans?

Speaking of which... its gets me wondering who you'd pick for the cast...

After seeing the excellent Gangster No. 1, I'd cast Paul Bettany as Alex and myself as Pete! :D

You couldn't act yourself out of a paper bag. EOTL would do a badass adaptation. I already know I want to adapt Choke or Lullaby.

Yeah, you bet it's great. I was fucking joking, buddy, relax. Most times you should know not to take me seriously. I haven't been able to see it yet cuz I had to pick up something that means more to me. Maybe I should just take 20 bucks off the money tree growing out my asshole?

Alright, droogies, or whatever the hell you people call each other. I happened to come across the book, I got it finally. But skimming over some shit in this thread I hear something of a 21st chapter or some stuff? Well, looks like this only goes up to seven, boxed in as a square.

The cover has flames and a gray contorted face underneath it, with the title over it. The author's name on top, and to the sides it says Norton Paperback Fiction...192 pages...

Call me stupid for being wary of which one I have, but some clarification on this would help so I know I have the right one...thanks.

I read the book about 2 years before I saw the movie. First, I had no idea that the movie was even an adaptation from a book. I was at the library one day, and saw A Clockwork Orange sitting there on the shelf. I was quite surprised to see it in book form. I remembered one of my teachers discussing how strange of a movie it was, so I picked up the book, sat in one of the big cumfy library chairs, and read the first couple of pages. About 3 hours later, I finished the book...and damn it was so kickass. To see a book spell out futuristic visions of violence, high technology, and authoritarianism with such grace was fantastic. Even though I finished the book in the library, I checked it out and read it two more times at home and at school.

Its a fantastic book that is MUCH perferred over the movie by me. Even though I like Kubrick's vision, it felt as if the film was lacking something. I dunno, I might have to watch it again. I havent seen it, in about a year or so.

Amazon.com, here I come.
:)

Apparently, I'm the "book virgin" on this thread. I've only seen the movie.

So, who's the bloody director around here? Chucky? Either Chucky or EOTL.

The book is really good , from what i've read of it. Be sure to get that. As for the director, i'd say EOTL. :)
