I got a whopper of a problem for you to work on Sean.

My computer 'died' about a week ago, I'm usually my old PC in the meantime.

I was using the computer when it suddenly went off. After that occurrence, the computer no longer starts correctly. Whenever I push the power button, the computer will start but there will be no display on the monitor. There are also no beeps. I tested my monitor on another computer and it works, so it definitely isn’t the monitor. The computer shows no sign of booting either; the hard drive isn't showing activity. The two drivers, CDRW and DVD, open when I push the button (They also light up when I turn the machine on). When I opened the system and then powered it up, I see that the CPU fan is running. I thought maybe it could be failed RAM, but I tested my stick on another computer and it worked fine.
I'm thinking it’s either the CPU or the motherboard itself that is causing the problem. Then again, I’m not sure if perhaps the power supply could be the cause. Initially when the computer suddenly went off, I remember the power button not working at all. After I unplugged everything and plugged them back in, the power button did work- however, no display.
The computer has had no upgrades whatsoever, and I didn't install anything recently. I was currently running Windows XP service pack 2 at the time. My video card is integrated on the motherboard.

Does any of this sound like something you know? I'd like to identify the problem.

well if you are getting lights show up then it's not the power supply. is the video connection on the mother board or a separate card? it sounds like a combination of things: CPU is dead, hard drive is dead, or mother board is dead.

try swapping some of the parts out into the other machine to see ifthey work to determine where it is coming from...

let me know the results

I read somewhere online that it should "beep" to indicate things such as failed ram or a hard drive.
I don't get any beeps at all, so that's why I'm puzzled. It leaves it to a few things. The CPU, Motherboard, video card, or possibly power supply. But as you said, the power supply seems to be working so then it can't be the power supply. However, when the incident first occurred, I remember the power button not working at all. I waited a few minutes, unplugged things/plugged back in and then it came on- just no display.

I don't have a spare computer to test things on so I'll probably take it up to Best Buy. I just wonder how much it will cost just to determine the problem. Dammit, I'm never buying a bargain PC again. lol

EDIT: Wouldn't the computer at least boot to the bios screen if there was a dead hard drive?

EDIT 2: My video card is on the motherboard. (cheapo~)

i have a quick question. when someone posts a link within their post, like icparenumber1 did for the "MTV" battle thread, and i click on it, nothing happens. i even just tried to click on the help link next to where is says "vB Code" and got nothing. but all the links at the top of the screen work. is this something i need to change in my browser settings? or the settings within the message board? thanks for your time.

sounds like something's wrong w/ your video card to me. You might wanna check that out....swap your other vid. card in there, see if it works alright, if not then i'm gonna say it's your hard drive...cuz idk what else it would be if it's def. not the power supply.

Go to CP and "edit options"...is "yes" clicked where it asks you to automatically sign you in when you get to the board?

this could be because of an error with a web site. was there a particular one that you kept visiting?

Alrighty then. Well, I recieved a file of a friends film that he is doing, and it is a .img file. It runs about 2 GB (I know, its pretty fucking big). He did not tell me how to watch it at all. So, I took it upon myself to see how to open it. CloneCD was the only thing I could see. Then, I realized I am only allowed to make CD's or something with this type of file, if any of this makes sense. My questions are:

-Is there a way to view a .IMG file using some sort of player like DivX?-
-Is it possible to change the file from .IMG to .WMV or some other file in which I can view it with any player? How?-

I am not a really big computer guy, so I am not too familiar with this kinda stuff. I just use the comp for games, internet, and making movies. So if anybody would be so kind as to help me out here, it would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

atomic dog
09-17-2004, 04:22 PM
.img files i believe open with global divx. so try that. converting to .wmv you might need the program that he made it on to do the converting. what program did he use?

Michaeleon you said you downloaded the XP service pack 2? Did this problem occur the first time you reset your comp after? Turns out if you didnt unplug your peripherals IE. printer, digital camers it fucks up your computer big time. My girlfriend downloaded it didnt disco . our printer when she installed it . So whenever we turned on our computer it sat in a continuous reset it would just constantly reset, we had to reformat the entire hard drive on it....sucked.....hope this helps

Michaeleon
09-19-2004, 10:36 AM
Aw, thanks for the suggestion Chris but I don't think that's it.
I had Win SP2 installed for 2-3 weeks before this, and had no problems with it.
Whoa, I'm glad I didn't have my printer connected when I installed it though- I didn't know about that glitch.

I think it's either the motherboard, CPU, or power supply. I have a good feeling its the power supply, which isn't such a bad thing. That would be the cheapest to replace. All the fans are running though- the power supply fan and the CPU fan, so that puzzles me. This all happened on Labor Day, I remember it being quite hot.

Hey thanks! That worked! I am not sure what program he used, but I am satisfied right now, so I don't need anymore help with this problem.

Alrighty, now I have a 2nd problem. Well, I was trying to open a program, when it said:

"The application has failed to start because mss32.dll was not found."

So I went and d/l mss32.dll, and stuff. Well, now when I click on the program, it says:

"The procedure entry point _AIL_3D_room_type@4 could not be located in the dynamic link library mss32.dll"

What is going on? Is there a way to fix this so I can use the program? Please, any help if possible would be appreciated!

atomic dog

sounds like there are missing pieces of that program. delete the program and reinstall it. this should fix the issue.

atomic dog
09-19-2004, 05:40 PM
michaeleon- it sounds like the motherboard or CPU is the issue. possible the hard drive. but if there is power in the fans the power supply is ok.

I'm not sure exactly how this happened, but many programs on my computer (ex: paint, real player, AIM,etc) show up on the desktop as a LNK File. The image changed to a small white box with a computer in it. When I try to open it it says something about downloading the program into the comp. Only when I open up the C drive and look for the particular program to use is how I can open them up. What's up with this?

atomic dog

sounds like they have been redirected. when you click on them it will ask you to find the file. so browse for it and the icon will change to the correct one.

Yea...I got a problem with my CD Burner.

I go to burn something get everything ready to burn...I hit the burn button on Nero...it starts the process at 50% and then freezes...I hit Abort, but the shit still runs for about an hour trying to burn something with no luck.

Is this fixable, or do I need a new burner?

I had that same problem with Nero. It wasnt my burner but Nero itself. I just use Windows media player now to burn things. But i guess it could still be your burner.

All of the above mentioned...games, dataCD's. I don't have a floppy drive so CD-Rs were my main source of transferring files. But I recently purchased a 128MB jumpdrive that handles the small files pretty good....so no more wasting CDs for those little shits...but now I am not wasting ANY CDs on anything since my burner is pissed.

ok try this. delete all prgrams and drivers for the cd burner. the restart and install everything from the beginning. and restart again and see if that works. the drivers/software could have becoe corrupt over time and just need a re-install.

what are you trying to copy? it's it's rentals or other dvds. you can't do it directly without dvd x-copy. it's a ripping software that gets past the copywriter laws and such.

No teh video im trying to burn is already authored. Ive got the .vob files and now converted them into a .iso file. Its just that none of the software recognises that a DVD is in the drive, but it has no problem with buring cd's.

ok, my question is this. recently i have been getting this popup from some company called viewpoint that says my viewpoint player was installed sucessfully and to click the update buttons for new updates. the problem is that i didn't want to install a viewpoint player and in the pop up window there isn't a button to close the window, just buttons for links to the update and links that say "who we are." now since i didn't download this particular player i don't feel like clicking either link because i just don't trust anything that magically appears on my computer. also, when i try to delete it off of my hard drive i get this message "cannot delte viewmgr.exe: access is denied. the source file may be in use." thanks in advance for help regarding this. ugh! PCs. this sort of thing never happens on my imac.

Evil Never Dies
11-09-2004, 01:29 PM
Well the reason why it says "cannot delete viewmgr.exe" is because it is running in the background. I don't think it is spyware or anything like that. But the best thing is to stop it in the background and then try uninstalling it.

Well sometimes this works:

If you press control+alt+delete then a menu should pop up.

Click processes and a list should come up with different programs running in the background. Look for that program or something that looks like it. (If you are using anything below xp just press control+alt+ delete and the menu will pop up, you don't need to look for processes)

Hope this works.

Iam using the search thing right above where the address thing normaly is. It's fixed now though, maby pressing address bar did work but it took awhile to take effect or something. But that doesn't even make any sense cause I had already tried it earlier. I donno, my whole computer is weird.

well the mpeg format can be treated as a regular data file. so use the data copy function in nero.

Well, all I'm saying is that you copy one quickquote and then click on another and once that one opens it up, just paste the other one you wanted in there and then copy everything you have (both of the quotes), and then if you need more quoted portions, just repeat the process. No need for multiple windows :)

ok i know this one:
look in your add/remove program folder. this is under settings - control panel. see if there is something listed that shouldn't be there, like easy web or something of that sort. delete it and also open the internet options without opening up the IE portal. in there go to the TOOLS tab and select the PROGRAM tab. there is a button to rest web settings. try that.

Ok i have one big problem with my laptop. If im loading something, and if its taking too long, my laptop will just completely click off. And if I restart it too soon, it will just shut off again in a second. I took it to get it checked out before, and the guy said it was all the spyware I had. You think thats it sean? When I run the "spy-bot search and destroy" program itll get close to done and then say I have a error cause of "Z-Demon and then writing in what I think is dutch". Any idea why its a peice of crap? haha

try to use the add.remove porgrams icon in the control panel. select the icon for wmp or the update, which ever is listed. delete it then restart and reinstall.

I went into that, deleted some thing that was windows media player but had a name infront of it which was weird. So I then went into windows components and removed windows media player. So now I have to restart the computer for it to take affect?

It worked. I restarted and it immediately went to installing WMP10. Though, I still dont know why when its restarted its super super slow. Thats why I hate restarting it, becuase it takes a good hour to get it back to speed.

I dont know if this is a common problem with live journal but all day mine has said, journal is in read only mode as we are updating the server where your journal is located.

i refresh the page and it lets me do what I was doing.

So just a moment ago....I tried to add another entry....wrote a nice long one, and it did the same thing.

Is this a common problem, or do I just have some bad luck?

cause for the most part of last nite all the sites i visited were unusually slow.
i emptied my history and voila! back to full speed.

im crossing my fingers hoping that live journal works now....

LJ's been having a TON of issues with that as of late...with journals being in read-only. I stay logged in at the house so I don't run into that...I can at least get logged in.

Just wait a few mins, see if it goes off read-only.

Oh, and don't let the "getting a paid account helps" trick you. I have a paid account, and while I can access and post in my journal, I can't in other places when it's in read-only.

why thank you. :) I change my layout all the time. Paid accounts do have perks, in that your journal doesn't go read only for yourself, but if communities are read-only, you still can't post there. You get more styles with paid and more user pics...and apparently faster loading time.

I have a Halloween community if you'd like to join. It's fairly active. The link is in my profile there.

I'm not sure if its the recent no hotlinking rule, well I'm pretty sure it is, but alot of the images on the board are x's for me. The banners, the smilies, the quote-pm-edit-search buttons.

If you have firewall software like Zone Alarm on your computer, that could be confusing the banner images on this site as ads. In which case, you need to individially configure your firewall to accept Popups/Banners/Ads for the OHMB.

Donnie Darko
03-14-2005, 07:18 PM
yeah, chris. i would do it like that.

in my experience its never a great idea to uninstall IE completely because it digs itself deep inside the Windows shell. ive completely uninstalled it before but it caused me more overall problems every time because XP kinda relies on IE.
if im not mistaken, firefox is about 5mb and IE is about 45mb, so that alone tells you that its a bit more than just an internet browser.

i really hope that reinstall works for ya though.

if that doesnt work then the only thing i can think of that maybe you havent tried yet would be to right click where the images should be and click "show image" or "view image" (whichever)
if the picture then shows then maybe it will be there as well whenever you reload the page. just an idea.

you could try the display ALT for all images. it's in the tools section of IE. also see if there is a script error.

boogeyman87
03-14-2005, 07:35 PM
I tried the show pictures option but it doesnt do the job. I see the "always expand ALT text images" option, is that it? I guess I'll just download IE but I'm thinking it wont do anything becuase I already have internet explorer, will it let me install it?

I do all my surfing and internet activity on Mozilla. I only use IE for the board, and that is it. I know I could learn to love it, eventually with the way it looks on Mozilla but just knowing that the version I like is just sitting right there with a stupid little red x problem bugs me.

I tried to install IE 6.0 but it told me that setup has detected I have a newer version of IE already on the computer. I have no idea what to do now.
