Well, I guess it depends on what you consider 'zombie'. Itís not a conventional zombie-flick per se, more of a forbidding ghost tale. However, it dealt with victims of that unjust crime rising from the dead to claim retribution- so I say it can fall under that category.

What ever you do, DO NOT GET the top one. Its a peice of shit only made to cash in on a profit...and it failed at that.

Look for this one:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005Y6Y2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Its the best version out there, and its certified by GAR himself. It was OOP, but Elite recently started up manufactoring and re-releasing copies. So you should be able to find one pretty easy.

John Russo added 15min of extra footage to NOTLD for that first DVD you posted...the footage was created just in time for the 30th Anniversary DVD to be released. LAME.

LoL...I remember reading an interview where Goerge was asked about the 30th Anniversary DVD, and George replied with something like "Extra footage?...I never shot any extra footage...how could there be extra footage!?" Reading some of his interviews is such a riot.

Good luck in your venture for the ME DVD. Its very nice. I am surprised Best Buy doesn't carry it, because that's where I purchased mine...hmmm.

I remember I tried Ebay once...that was when the ME was OOP. I won the bid, but the guy never actually had the DVD. He owns a big music/movie store, and sells shit loads of CDs and DVDs on Ebay. It was just my luck, that he misplaced the NOTLD DVD, and had to order another one. About 2 months went by with no DVD, so I told him to fuck it and refund my money, because low and behold, I found the re-released ME version at Best Buy.

I bet the reason you are seeing a shortage of the ME DVDs now, is because that colored version was released. Best Buy doesn't want to have a whole mess of NOTLD DVDs on the shelves. Even though I always see them carrying 4 different Army of Darkness DVDs.

I'd buy it if I were you. It's one of the better Fulci zombie movies among The Beyond, and Zombi 2. I enjoy it more than Zombi 2...I liked the use of night time settings within the film. Sometimes it was hard to make out what's happening, but I think overall, it adds to the film better than if everything was shot in the day time. It enhances the unknown factor I guess you could say. You should buy it just for the scene of the priest hanging himself. That some powerful imagery right there.

I recommend it if you liked The Beyond and Zombi 2.

It's just the Extended Version. The Director's Cut is often referred to as the Theatrical Version by George Romero because that's the version of DOTD he perfers.

So in reality there is no version of DOTD referred to as the "Director's Cut".

I own The Fog and 28 Day Later, but I don't consider either of them Zombie Movies. The Fog is a ghost story, so they're ghosts, and 28 Days Later is about a plague which infects LIVING humans with Rage who are still very much alive when they are killing. I can see counting the Fog since they are dead, but not 28 Days Later.

04-15-2005, 07:00 AM
28 Days Later is tricky because it doesn't fit into the Hollywood definition of zombies but it fits into the Webster definition. A zombie doesn't neccessarily have to be dead to be a zombie. Before the walking dead became popular zombies described anybody in a trance of lost consciousness. People that appeared to be driven by urges alone, or controlled by voodoo spells were considered zombies. 28 Days Later falls into that grey territory that can be the center of debate, but I don't think I will correct someone if they consider it a zombie flick.

The Fog is kind of the same, except the undead only appear when a fog rolls around. It was unclear to me at least if these where apparitions, or zombies that were controlled by some supernatural force.

Good points. When you explain it that way I can see why it would be included. I'm just more attuned to the Romero type of Zombie, or Modern version if you prefer.

It's all a matter of personal preference I think when it comes to the grey areas, but point taken.

also along these line the serpent and the rainbow fit into this grey void. the main character was possed by voodoo and somewhat dead but not really and yet acted like a zombie.

thoughts? I don't. I guess you could, but then again you'd have to start throwing in every character that was ever ressurected in such a fashion You could even build an arguement saying that Frankenstein was a zombie. Hell, you could say that Jesus was a zombie as well.

Personally I would just stick with the films commonly associated with the zombie genre. The Beyond is widely accepted to be a zombie flick, so is Serpent and the Rainbow.

I'm not sure if the movie was really meant to truly frighten people. It certainly did when I was a kid, but as I grew up I began to realize that...
A.) the movie is delivered in a very tongue in cheek fashion. It's almost like a comic book. It's not meant to frighten as much as entertain, and provoke thought. I mean, just listen to the goofy soundtrack.
B.) there is alot of symbolism and meaning tucked away in it.

I implore you to give it another chance with those things in mind.

well, here's my list:

night of the living dead
dawn of the dead
return of the living dead
shaun of the dead
28 days later

not a very big list, but the only italian zombie movie i have seen is cemetery man, which isn't on dvd (that i know of.) still, it's a fun zombie movie. i have never seen any of the fulci zombie movies, please don't hate me, haha.

i also own the fog and the evil dead movies, but i never really considered them zombie movies until i started posting here. as far as the debate over 28 days later being a zombie movie, i always considered it to be one. one reason is because when i saw the trailer for the first time there was a quote on the screen that said "danny boyle reinvents the zombie movie." so i figured if they are using it in their ad campaign it must be a zombie movie. also, i figured that since the people would probably never be cured of the rage infection, they must be considered the living dead. it really doesn't matter to me either way though, i just think that 28 days later is a pretty good movie.

So in reality there is no version of DOTD referred to as the "Director's Cut".

In England, we have a directors cut. But after inspection, I found out it's the extended edition, cus I know Romero counted his evrsion as the directors. Anywho, I'm gonna try and get a hold of the 4 disc thing from the States.

And my collection is pretty small for zombie films, still. lol.

Dawn of the Dead: Directors Cut (2004)
Shaun of the Dead
Resident Evil
Evil Dead (Urgh)

Does Pirates of the Caribbean count? lol. They're kinda zombie-pirates.

they dont have the integrity that Romero movies have, of course. but theyre good for 80s cheese definitely. i still need to get part 2.

more often people seem to like parts 1 and 2 better than 3.

Evil Dead films are just as close to being zombie flicks as pretty much any Fulci film. And just because 28DL and it's sequel involve people being infected doesn't make them not count. They are zombie films without coming right out and saying it.

No way. Although Evil dead series I count in the Zombie collection, they're demons. They spoke, changed back into humans, etc. Fulci's Zombi 2 is 100% from the grave, flesh eater Zombies.

It was alright the first viewing a few months back, but I haven't watched it since. The Leave it to Beaver vibe got old after a bit. There's not enough meat on the bones to really make it a long lasting love. I didn't mind it, but it didn't deserve all the praise heaped on to it. I think I'm kind of burned out on zombie flicks for the time being. It has gotten too trendy.

Nice! I'm heading to Yankee Stadium (ugh) to watch them play the Blue Jays tomorrow. I'm rooting for the Jays, since I'm a Boston fan. Lol.....

Lol....as the horror genre goes, you guys are never disappointed with that, lol :)

I have vague recollections of Zombie Lake or Shock Waves, but it's been so long, I can't remember.
There's so many old zombie flicks and at one time they were my favorite. They are definitely the scariest to me, more so than any slasher, vampire, werewolf, etc...

How is Diary of the Dead? I almost bought it the other day but thought I'd ask you guys first...my track record with newer Zombie flicks isn't so good, I kinda gave up after Land of the Dead, personally I did not like it at all. Don't get me going on Children of the Living Dead (as poor Ravenheart can attest to with my rantings)....but anyone have any advice on that?

Khan

Shock Waves is low budget but good, and the lack of gore actually helps it.

Diary Of The Dead is Romero going back to his independent roots.

Twisted Sister
09-02-2008, 04:58 AM
I have a NOTLD 1990 question actually. I’m not dense, but always wondered about something. In the beginning, when Barbara and Johnny were in the cemetery and the first guy comes up and grabs Johnny, then staggers off saying “I’m sorry….I’m sorry…” is he a zombie? It was just weird to me. Other than a little blood on his forehead, he didn’t SEEM to be a zombie, but then he swung around when the zombie attacked….I always wondered that. Thanks in advance 

Answered my own question by investigating. I guess I needed to watch the commentary with Tom Savini..the first guy was not a zombie, but the undertaker who was attacked by the guy he was burying. He was injured and stumbling around, not yet a zombie, confused and rambling "I'm sorry". Cool. Useless knowledge.

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things isn't too bad. It has some pretty gore scenes. But I find it to be alittle slow. It really doesn't pick up until the last 30-35 minutes or so. But if you're HUGE into zombie flicks, it's worth a watch at least once.
