Just got the Special Edition DVD. The transfer is great...all the old VHS tapes looked like they were transferred from murky prints. So it's great to have the DVD.
Anyone else here love this movie? If so, this is the place to discuss it. And if you didn't like it, or haven't seen it, this is also the place to discuss that.

Damn.. I just missed this movie over the weekend. I have a movie theatre near me that plays old movies at midnight and Angel Heart was this past weekends flick. I tried to convince some friends to go.. but even me telling them that DeNiro is the devil in it wasn't good enough.
Oh well.. next week they're showing Rocky Horror.. that should be fun. :)

Damn! Wish a theater around here would play Angel Heart...I'd love to see it on a big screen. Do your friends smoke a lot of crack or something? ;)

I agree. Jacobs Ladder is a Great movie. Very under-rated. I think it was adrian Lynne who directed it, He also directed Fatal attraction. BAD MOVIE.

Ok, could someone explain to me how that necklace got around that dead girl at the end? And what that detective says when he looks at it (can't remember what the comment was, but I didn't understand it). I always thought this film was similar to Jacob's Ladder, but I prefer Jacob myself. That's one of my favourites, I love the Owl Creek Bridge storyline in anything, that's my favourite story ever, and it was done so well in Jacob's Ladder. The only thing about Angel Heart was that end scene, it confused me totally. And it wasn't even discussed on the DVD commentary (at least in wasn't on the first DVD release, don't know about the new one?)

Cyphre put the dog tags on the girl. Remember...he picks up the gun and the dog tags when he puts the record on. Then Harry Angel runs back to his hotel room and finds the cops there. The girl is shot, and Harry's dog tags are around her neck. The cop says something along the lines of "Who is she? I know she isn't 'Angel, Harold.'"
Jacob's Ladder was a damn good movie from a man whose made more than his share of bad movies. In fact, Jacob's Ladder was Adrian Lyne's only really impressive credit...and largely thanks to Bruce Rubin, whose script was pretty phenomenal.
It's a toss-up as to which film I like better...but I may have to go with Angel Heart on the basis of atmosphere, setting, cinematography, and music...not to mention Rourke's brilliant performance.

Angel Heart was long and drawn out psychologically. It was too complex for many of my friends, but I found it rather sickly myself.
Excellent Brooklyn depiction, Excellent New Orleans cinemaphotography.
Voodoo is some wacky ass shit (I got a thing about chickens now myself).
I cut the spoiler part of this post,
just watch the movie.

Actually, it's been a long while since I've watched the film, so I'd have to check it out again before I really commented on that. I know I understood it...maybe not the first couple of times, but I think the third time or so, I got it all nailed down. But it's just been too long to recall the details and the exact chronology. I'm glad this thread has been resurrected, though (I'd actually forgotten that I'd started it), and I'll definitely have to give it another watch soon and post the explanation.
Definitely agree about the complexity of the film. It's got that great feel of a classic film noir serpentine plot and the period depictions are so vivid and fantastic. And it's just such a bleak film. I love it. Hell of a movie.
By the way...even though this thread isn't getting much attention, you might want to put spoiler tags on those major plot revelations. Just in case someone hasn't seen it. It's a gem, but it's a predominantly overlooked gem...a lot of people probably don't know much about it, so I'd hate for my thread to spoil the movie for them.

I've always wanted to checkout Angel Heart, simply for Bobby D playing the Devil, but have yet to see it all. I do remember seeing part of it on USA, TNT or a cable channel like that & being very impressed.

Get it. Seriously. You can't be disappointed by it, because that simply isn't possible. Don't put it off any longer. This is one hell of a movie, and it's far too underrated. Get it...watch it...post your thoughts. You'll be glad you did. In fact, let's make it official:
EOTL's official film recommendation for the week of October 15-21, 2006: Angel Heart
