View Full Version : Silent Night, Deadly Night

I questioned posting this because I know not everyone has seen this little gem of a slasher... but for those who have, talk about it here! :D
Anyways, this is definately one of my fave horror movies... I actually love it more than I should because it is anything but an amazing movie... it borders on exploitation... but who gives a fuck?
The plot focuses on how little 8 year old Billy Caldwell watches a thug dressed as St. Nick violently murder his parents leaving him and his baby brother Ricky as orphans. At the orphanage Billy and Ricky are subjected to extreme cruelty courtesy of extreme nuns... the brothers are taught that "Punishment is good... Punishment is absolute..." and Billy's phobia of anything Santa-related becomes a living nightmare for him. We see Christmas, he see's death, pain and hell. So when an 18 year old Billy gets a job at a toy store... everything seems fine... until December 25th that is. Whats worse is that the dumbass boss he has dresses him up as a store Santa!!! Billy snaps. Billy kills. Billy kills again... and again!!!
One Line Review :: Very fun 80's slasher with the usual elements you would expect...
For those who havent seen it... do so ;)
A Silent Night, Deadly Night & Black Christmas combo make the perfect December 25th :D

I love this movie. I rented it one night on a fluke. My friend April and I wanted to rent a Christmas themed movie (it was, in fact, around Christmas time) Well, oddly enough, Muppet Christmas Carol was out (and no, I'm not making this up). So, we ventured to the horror section to see what we could find. We came across this and picked it up. We got back to my apt, called a couple of our friends, and they came out to watch it with us. For about two months after watching it, Jay walked around yelling PUNISH and NAUGHTY at people...weirdo...how I miss him.
RAMBLE....sorry
Yes, if you've not seen this movie, rent it..it's good fun

I could summarise an endless list of things about the sequel that make it one of the funniest movies of all-time right here, right now! It almost beats Weekend At Bernie's and Ghostbusters... but not quite ;)
Fuck... I need to watch it now...

Dont get your little pink panties in a twist now... you're probably thinking of one of the VHS taglines;
If "A Nightmare on Elm Street" gave you sleepless nights, or if "Halloween" made you jump in every shadow or if every "Friday the 13th" was more frightening that the others... THEN BEWARE!
I only see that as a way to get fans of those movies to buy it because it's along the same lines... you know? Slasher movies...
We all know its not in any way better than Halloween...
It's just saying this will do for Christmas what Michael Myers did for Halloween...

You werent right at all though...
It claimed to do the same as Halloween etc by turning a festive holiday into a nightmare...
Holiday = Halloween - Scary because of Michael Myers
Holiday = Friday The 13th (is it a holiday?) - Scary because of Jason Voorhees
Holiday = Christmas - Scary because of Billy Caldwell

Parts 1-3 with the Santa slasher are pretty good even though alot of part 2 is flashbacks to the first one.Part 3 isn't bad but I would have preferred him in the Santa suit.Part 4 goes in a whole new direction. Its not a bad movie but it was very weird.I've never gotten to see part 5 yet but I'm hoping to check it out at some point.

Finally watched these movies. The first one was good, liked it alot. But the second one SUCKED BALLS!!!! My god was it aweful. The guy who played Ricky was a horrible actor and incredibly cheesey. And how exactly did he manage to have the save vivid flashbacks and Billy from the first. The guy was like 2 when his parents were murdered, and he was in the car. I thought the Part 2 stunk horribly. They should have stopped at one.

I've seen Black Christmas, but never SNDN. Did SNDN use "Billy", because BC did? Do you think the film's have any relation to one another? Maybe SNDN trying to hint as being somewhat of a prequel? Like, Billy comes back in BC, or someone of relation to his past, prank calling and talking about "Billy" so much?

I saw Silent Night, Deadly Night a long time ago. It was decent, the second one was okay. The 3rd one was so and so. The 4th one, which involved some witchcraft was good. But, the 5th one was the worst of the 5, it's like Pinnochio from hell.

I bought the DVD of 1 & 2 recently and watched both yesterday for the first time in a few years. The first one is easily the better of the two, but part 2 is fun in a so-bad-it's-good way. I also like the other 3 sequels and plan on watching them all again soon. What I think is funny is that they've made so many sequels to Hellraiser, Children of the Corn, and Amityville, but yet the Silent Night, Deadly Night series died years ago. Am I the only one who'd like to see a part 6?

The one thing I remember most about the whole "Silent Night Deadly Night" controversy when it premiered back in 1984, was Mickey Rooney taking out a full page editorial in the L.A.Times so he could blast the movie and it's desecration of a holiday figure.
Then, only a scant few years later, what does the little hypocritical bastard do? He stars in "Silent Night Deadly Night Part 5"!

You would think after the failure of the Black Christmas remake, some people would learn that maybe there isn't as much money in remaking classic horror films as they thought, but I guess Screen Gems isn't one of them because they're talking about remaking another Christmas horror classic, Silent Night, Deadly Night. I loved Silent Night Deadly Night, great character build up for our main man Billy. They really illustrate why he doesn't like christmas and why he does the things he does that night of the staff party. Some of my favorite scenes are the first bit with the Santa going on a crime spree holding up stores and setting up road blocks. Then Billy hears what his crazy Grandpa has to say about Santa Clause. Santa ends up killing poor Billy's family. That one scene where the mysterious Santa is yelling at Billy "Where are you? You little shit!" I thought that was great, no wonder the kid is so traumatized. Then he goes through that horrible ordeal with Mother Superior. All of the events culminate to that one night where they make him wear the Santa Clause outfit and he gets drunk and snaps. Personally one of my favorite slasher flicks.

SNDN has a few things to recommend it. First of all, actual plausible psychology that obviously had some thought put into it. And second, there's some great cinematography in here...dare I even say artistic? Yes...of course I dare.
Of course, it suffers from some of the pitfalls that plague most any low-budget slasher of the era. But there's a lot to distinguish it, as well. I'd place it above average for a mid-'80s indie exploitation flick.

I love the original Silent Night, Deadly Night. The 2nd one basically recapped the original, and had maybe 30-40 minutes of new footage. I didn't really care for that one. I actually liked 3. It had Bill Mosely, so that helped a bit. It's been quite a while since i've watched 4 and 5.
They're releasing a new DVD of the original. I have the DF, but i'm still going to pick this one up.

I'm not clear as to why one would watch a low budget slasher film from the eighties and hope to see some academy award winning acting, stellar direction, and artistic cinematography? There is only two things I look for in a film like this; gore and tits. And as far as I'm concerned, this film delivers beautifully.
Why one would even waste their time in contorting anything else out of a flick like this is beyond me. Just a fun film to turn your brain off and get drunk to.

Nice...glad they went with the original poster art and not some lame CGI Photoshopped image that has nothing to do with the film (yea I'm talking about The Burning DVD art).

I'm not clear as to why one would watch a low budget slasher film from the eighties and hope to see some academy award winning acting, stellar direction, and artistic cinematography?
Well, to be fair, SNDN did have some artistic (or at least "artsy") cinematography. Not a lot...haha...but there were a few nice shots in there that were obviously carefully thought-out. The story was pretty well thought-out, as well. Naturally, the production values and acting land it firmly in the realm of '80s cheese...but I'd hate to think that completely overshadows the better "artistic" points of the film.
Sure, cheese is good...but there was at least a bit more actual psychology to SNDN than your average '80s slasher. And that shot of the blood-dripping axe is a beautiful cinematic still-life. And some of the gore FX were pretty damn realistic for '84, as well. haha

Can't wait to get the new DVD! Here's to hoping that they'll get the rights to 3-5 and release those next year.

This wasn't a bad movie, but the sequel wasn't that good.
