this thread didnt seem to get very popular. i wasnt even on the board when it started but il be the first to answer.
if the question is asking what "scream" is the best then i think scream 1 is the best in that trilogy. if the question ask what your favorite movie to scream during is id say halloween, but scream is close.

The original is best, mainly just for the opening sequence with Drew Barrymore. I am not a big fan of the sequals, but they aren't that bad. The original is definitely the most superior in my eyes. Plus, I like watching it since my cousin got to be an extra in one of the scenes. It is always funny to watch a red dot fly by on the screen and yell out..."that's her!" :D

Scream 2 is more or less a repeat of the original, with inferiority. The final chapter of the trilogy has a new backstory, plus a shocking ending, yet the original's still the best, and my favorite. Scream set a new standard for horror movies, and is what I consider landmark for this genre.

The original was the best.
They kept you going back and forth about the identity of the killer. Just when I thought it was Sydneys father, Randy made his speech about how her father was just a red herring. They timed that perfectly.

I really, really enjoyed the first one. I would have to say that was my favorite. It also gave me a few laugh's too!
The second was ok, wasnt all that good.
The third was my second favorite. It was up around the first. It felt more like the first movie, the second sorta didnt. Thats why i liked it.
I also loved how they kept all the main characters alive! Something "halloween" doesnt seem to do :(

I had to go withthe Original Scream.
in most all horror films you never get any better in then the Original. and for sure the first was the best.
altho I do love the touch the second and third film added with the Sequel idea

Definitely the original for me. The second was a well-made sequel in my opinion and the third is my least favorite. However, there are still a few chilling scenes in the third such as the scene with Maureen's ghost (Sidney's dream).

the problem with the 3rd one for me is there was only 1 killer and not 2. in the first two films there were always 2 killers, so while i was trying to predict the killer, i was after 2 guys. then i was wrong in the end.

They probably decided on just one killer so it would throw us off. We're expecting two, like the predecessors, and it turns out differently. I was shocked when it turned out to be you-know-who, and even more surprised when he explained his motives.

According to the commentary by Wes Craven, Angelina Tyler (Emily Mortimer) was supposed to be the second killer, as Roman Bridger's girlfriend and ex-classmate of Sidney from the first Scream, but the producers didn't like the idea.
As for what is my favourite "Scream" movie. I'd have to say "Scream" although in saying that i also enjoyed "Scream 2".

Part 1 is my favourite as well. The Drew Barrymore scene will always be stuck in my memory. It was actually the first horror film I've sat through, and I was haunted by that scene haha.

I know there used to be another thread debating over whether or not there would be a Scream 4. I found this news off the internet and thought it was interesting. Who knows, maybe there could be a sequal in the works someday.
Big news for "Scream" fans from Wes Craven. During his panel discussion (at the Monster Mania convention in Cherry Hill, NJ) Craven revealed that he had recently had breakfast with Neve Campbell. He told us that she had recently spoken with the Weinsteins about coming back for "Scream 4". Wes made it clear that this was the first he'd heard about it, but Campbell seemed to be seriously considering another stab at Sidney Prescott.

I do'nt know what they could do with Scream 4 though, S3 was the weakest of the trilogy and the brother seemed kind of thrown in just to make another movie.

Believe me I know it. I myself got tired of Scream by the 2nd installment but I still watch the sequals every now and again. A fourth one will probably be severely lackluster, but I always hope for the best. Either way, it might be better than a lot of the remake crud at least.

did anyone see Scream 3 on TBS the other night?
I think a fourth one could work given the right treatment. I mean for one, next year is 10 years since the original and that is always a good excuse to resurrect a killer (see H20). Plus if they really want it to be original, kill Neve Cambell/Courtney Cox/David Arquette (either not all) off in the opening - No one would expect that, just like no one expected Drew Barrymore to be killed off!
Oh, just thought of a plot - Sidney could be a high profile actress and the killer can be some random deranged stalker or another actor that didn't get a part in a TV Show because Sidney did. And the opening could have Sidney being killed off but then someone yells 'cut' and it's revealed she just finished shooting a film. There's actually quite a lot of stuff you could in Scream 4, but the reality never really seems to equal to the dream.

Yeah, I caught the ending. The Scream films are starting to wear out their welcome on television. I love Scream, but I absolutely hate when films are worn out on television...especially horror films since they are spliced and diced and worn down to a lame edit. Then again I always find myself watching television cuts of films because I am too lazy to put on the actual dvd. This is why I absolutely love IFC (Independent Film Channel) showing horror films in full and usually commercial free.

Tom, you have some good points right their. :)
I'm open to Scream 4, seeing as it's been a while since the first few it needs to be a little different. I don't think killing Neve in the opening would be good, if they were going to do that, I can see it being David that get's the chop.

It seems to me like Neve Campbells career isn't going to well, so she is going back to her hit movie trilogy.

The 1st Scream was a breath of fresh air in a genre that was becoming complacent so i'll say its the best just because of the signifcance of the film.Scream 2 i thought was equally as good as the 1st but Scream 3 was a complete piece of shit. They totally wimped out with that one & its definatelynot a fitting ending to such a great franchise

My favorite was "Scream".
There was no need for Parts 2 and 3, imo. I'm not sure about a 4th installment...but since the series has been a "money maker" and the fact that Neve Campbell hasn't been in any high profile films lately, then of course she'd be up to a Scream 4 if nothing more than to put food on table.
I've always thought that Drew Barrymore would've been better suited to portray Sidney as opposed to Neve getting the role(Drew's cameo as Casey alone displays much better acting as a scared teenager than Neve's as Sidney). The character switch would've made for a much more enjoyable film, imo.

My favorite Scream is of course the 1st one. I like the 2nd one a lot but the 3rd one is just..ehh...ok. I watch all of them all the time though. I just love them even if some parts are cheesy... :D
My opinion on the whole Scream 4 is if they do make another one...I think Sidney is going to be the killer because of everything that's happened to her, she just loses it and goes insane lol. But of course we wouldn't know it was her until the very end because she wouldn't realize she was the actual killer.
But I don't know..you never know what they will do.

Scream 2 is my all time favorite in the trilogy. The first one was good, but the killer was made a bit too obvious, and with Scream 2, you didn't have a clue as to who the killer was. At least, I didn't. I like the setting of the second one better as well. The third one was in my opionion almost too much. I liked it to some degree, but I just wasn't feeling the characters like I was in the first two. It had a totally different feel to it; it was a movie, within a movie, and that kinda bugged me. I kinda wish they would have gone back to Woodsborrow for the last one, or some other location. The first one, as I said, was good, but the second was the best, IMO.

the original is the best, then 2...then 3...i'd love a scream 4 but i was pretty wrapped up by scream 3. but since its not just one killer like michael myers or jason they can make anyone a killer.
one thing i just wanted to comment on, though halloween are my favrote horrors one thing i really, really like about the scream movies is how realistc they are. Michael Myers, a normal boy turns evil and cannot be killed, love it but un-real. Scream, a normal teenager who runs and talks like a normal person. and feels pain like a normal person. ive just always liked that because it could actally happen

I don't think there was anything inferior to Scream 2. I think it totally lived up to the origional and I think Sarah Michelle Gellar was a great insert for Drew Barrymore's role in the first. I think Jenny McCarthy was hilarious in Scream 3. I loved all three of them.

Original was always THE best! a far better Wes Craven movie than the preety bad "Last House on The Left" but as good as his "Hills Have Eyes" and "Elm Street".
Part 2 is preety good considering during the same time Buffy starred in this movie and her show.

I would have to say Scream is the best. The opening act with Drew Berrymore being chased by Ghostface is a classic.. And the call about "What is your favortie scary movie," is also classic! Scream2 was just sad. The killers basically had nothing to do with what was goin' on. Now Scream3 went back to the basics. The thing I didn't get is... When Billy told Sidney that he killed her mother in the first movie, Roman also told Sidney he killed 'their' mother. I didn't get that part.

I enjoyed the third one the best. The first was great, the second was ok, the ending hurt it. The ending for the 3rd was shocking, but I thought well done.
The first movie brought back the genre and created many clones.
The second was fun and trying to be hip, but it seemed a little to rushed.
The third should of had Kevin Williamson come and write it, but the writer did a good job. It was rushed also, and then Dimension decided to release it a few months later. I went to see it in the theater and everybody was having fun with it.

I think he had lost confidence that he could write. He was going really strong for awhile, then a couple of his projects crashed and he didn't want to ruin the last of his trilogy. He wasn't invovled at all, really. I think he read through one of the very first drafts of the script, but he didn't even know who the killer was or anything else that was going on with it. He didn't even screen the movie before it came out. I'm sure he saw it eventually, but not before it was wide released. It is a shame, I think the movie could have been a million x's better had he been a bigger part of it.

Am I the only one, who thinks the original is pretty darn overrated? The opening sequence is admittedly awesome, and the chase and unmasking of the killer/killers at the end, is really exciting, but everything else is pretty By-the-numbers stuff. I prefer Scream 2. It just works a little better for me, for some reason.
I don't think the third one is bad at all either. Just a little too much cutesy humor, and too many flat characters getting offed.
My favourite is Scream 3, because i enjoy it the most...
I got bored of the first after too many viewings, and the 2nd never really got me to begin with, so, 3 is my favourite, but if i hadnt watched 1 so many times, i wouldve probably chosen that as my favourite.

The original. I enjoyed it's post modernist take on horror films, the witty dialouge and what I found to be some generally effective scare moments. Overall, it's probably Wes Craven's best film, though that's not saying much as I never thought any of his films achieved a level of being, what I would consider, a "masterpiece" - though before "Scream", NOES was probably the closest in my opinion.

I watched the first film again last week for the first time in a couple of years and it hasn't lost any of it's appeal, from the opening scene I was hooked again. Definitely one of my all time favourite movies. 10/10

The original, because IMO, that's the only one that didn't suck. Part 3 is the far runner-up, with Part 2 dead last. Blech.
The opening scene with Drew B. was great though. One of the ebst in a horror flick. It really is. But I also agree that it's overated. Sorry Neve Campbell! :(

The original was the best! it became a new masterpiece of the genre even though there were many crappy rip-offs that came afterwards, i think this is a better Wes Craven movie then his revolting "Last House on The Left" and as good as his "Hills Have Eyes (1977)" and "NOES".

Scream is a phanomanon. It brings all scary movies together to create a realistic movie with acually really scary scenes and a great story. It could really happen, it is very good, and it'll scare the crap out of you when you turn it on expecting it to be another low budget stupid film.
I agree that Scream 3 is pretty crappy. Like most sequels, you cant even compare it to its original.BUT that doesnt mean it is too horrible. Scream itself is a great movie, so a uncomparable movie would still be okay.
Scream and Scream 2
But, I think I would choose the original.

what do ou mean screwed up the whole genre? whoah now, hold on to your seatbelt man, this board is built off Halloween and Halloween didn't exactly die at Halloween III. I agree it would have if we didn't continue with Michael because three sucked, but show some enthusiasm. Halloween 4 & 5 are good movies. so is 6, not my favorite but it isnt anything to complain about. H20 was good and ressurections was an alright movie, because Halloween is still strong. and what about the other movies that are fine after 84. You should try to review some more movies. and besides the point, SCREAM is a great movie and was not exactly as "terrible" as you are letting off.

How exactly is the ending to parts one or two a twist? I can get the whole Sidney's half brother attempt for part 3 being a [bad] twist, but the first two seem like they would be believable.
With that said, I prefer the third one. The whole house at the end really got me interested. I like horror movies at a mansion.

the original will forever be the best.
part 2 was alright, and 3 was a joke. it was like they mixed scream w/ scooby doo (w/ the clues left at the crimes and the mansion at the end having secret rooms). i only watch the third film cos it is interesting, but i don't at all take it seriously.... i mean how could you. another reason scream 3 was lame was the fact that some of the stuff just wasn't practical, like when jenny mcarthy went into the costume storage and the killer is waiting there (like he knew she was going to run in there? it just was stupid). another is when they find roman in the prop coffin all bloody and he is pretending he was dead, how did he know anybody was going to look in that coffin? he could have been in there all night, there were just so many things like that plus the stuff i already mentioned that make the third installment a joke. fun film, but not of the same caliber as the first film or even the second.

Well Shape I am one who favors 3 over 2 and have had discussions in the past about this subject on this forum and I'll share my opinion on why I like 3 over 2 with you since you asked. To me part 2 was too much like the first one. At times I felt I was watching the first one but with very little changes. Even the ending seemed to me the same way with the twist leading up to be unvieled as Neve's boyfriend again. However I also felt that something bigger was going to come out of Roseanne's sisters part as the Journalist and do like the backstory that she was Billys mother. Not to mention I was PO'ed with Jamie's death so early as he was such a GREAT character and probably my favorite of the series. In the end I just didn't like it and wasn't into it.

Nah. It went like this:
Mickey told Sidney that Derek (her boyfriend) was involved so that she wouldn't untie him. Mickey then killed Derek and told Sidney that he was actually innocent and never had anything to do with it. The second killer ended up being Billy's mother. Cotton came in and killed her, Sidney and Gale killed Mickey.

Screram is the best horror film of the 90's. Unfortunately it lead to a lot of terrible ripoffs and even influenced that dreadful H20 movie. Scream was part horror movie and part satire. Which is what makes the trend of all the horror movies being influenced by Scream amusing. Most of these films came off as a parody of Scream and were laughable.
Scream 2 was a fine film , and I think it was a bit darker in tone than the original.
Scream 3 was comical at times. I don't think it was bad by any means, but it definitely imo the least serious of the franchise. I liked it for what it was. People tend to forget that Scream is as much of a satire as it is a horror film,, in that aspect Scream 3 works.

I agree that the Scream series was a big landmark and influence in what the "modern" horror genre has been reduced to. (Not speaking in terms of Scream cause I thought Scream was great, but speaking of most of the bad rip offs of Scream and such that came afterwards.) I think this is why I have such a problem with H20 and Ressurection. Poor scripts and poor casting choices in my opinion. (Except Jamie Lee Curtis ofcourse.)
And I'm still confused why Josh Hartnett was suddenly Laurie Strode's son on H20 and it was like Jamie Lloyd never even existed (even if she was killed off in 6). After 6 I feel that the storylines became a bit too complex to follow and/or what the old school Halloween fans would be accustomed to.
PS. Awesome Obama avatar...lol :)

Scream 2 was a fine film , and I think it was a bit darker in tone than the original.

i wouldn't say it is as much satire as horror. it is definitely a horror film first and foremost with a little bit of dark comedy thrown into the mix at times. Scream 3 totally missed the fact that it was supposed to be a horror film, and instead was just this rediculous R-rated Scooby Doo hour. it failed completely at being a horror film.
I agree Scream 2 is slightly darker than its predecessor, and considering it is the sequel it was fitting. the second act should always be the darkest.

what? i am no H20 fan, but i can still recognize that it had pretty top notch acting. right behind H6 i think it has some of the best in the series.

they ignored the events of H4-H6 in H20. Jamie didn't exist.

You know, I think that one of the main reasons why Scream 3 didn't reach the qualities of its predecessors was the sudden change of environment from high school/university areas to Hollywood. The school atmosphere with students all over the place worked well in the first two movies.
There also weren't so many suspects in the third sequel and, honestly, out of the three movies, this was the easiest one to guess who the killer is.

probably the first one but i prefer halloween and fri the 13th
Last night I have decided to re-watch Scream 3. Not as good as the first two, but still an enjoyable sequel.
There was, however, one thing that was pissing me off for the whole time - the character of detective Kincaid. What was the point of having him in the movie, he didn't do anything particularly special and, IMHO, the actor gave a very poor performance.

I'm going with the original.
Yes, it's close between the first two.
Scream 3 was okay, but it kind of had a Return of the Jedi vibe to it.
You can only use the same formula so many times before it gets old.
