Nick Castle is the best. There is no debate. He created the character, and, just as no James Bond will ever match up to Sean Connery, no Michael Myers will ever beat Nick's portrayal.

That said, I am partial to Chris Durand's Michael from H20...very "Castle-esque"...and I think George Wilbur's Michael from Halloween 6 was the most monstrously evil the character has ever been.

Castle made him insane, but Wilbur, in 6, made him evil.

It's got to be Dick Warlock for me.I thought his portrayal of Michael Myers was creepy & i personally think he deserves alot of credit because he was never given any direction by anyone in how they wanted him to play Michael Myers.

Dick Warlock Interview
Not a single word was ever discussed with me regarding how to do the character. I didn’t even have words with John until he came out to do some pick-up shots at the end of the movie. I watched the first movie and used the scene where He sits up along side the bed and turns his head towards Laurie as my inspiration for the character. I found it to be very robotic. To the beat of the music. I did what I thought would work.

cheers

03-30-2005, 02:01 PM
In all fairness, Carpenter didn't give Castle much direction either.
"Just walk" was Carpenters response when Castle asked him how Myers should move. It's not like they gave Castle all kinds of direction and left Warlock hanging. I think they pretty much got the same treament in terms of direction given.

I've enjoyed all the performances from the men who have portrayed The Shape. My personal favorite is Dick Warlock but it's almost a tie with Nick Castle really. My real reasoning for choosing Warlock is mainly because the original HalloweeN was made up of so many people being Michael Myers. Nick Castle may have been the main man but he wasn't Myers at all times. Warlock was the Shape through and through and his performance was excellent.

My least favorite was George Wilbur in part 6. He was great in part 4 though. I think it was just bad directing overall in part 6.

I'm gonna say Nick Castle, because he plays Michael so naturally, and that adds a certain creep factor to the Shape. It's hard to explain, but it seems like the Shape is so normal in the first one, because of how Castle plays him. This is something that's completely lost in the sequels, as no one was able to play the Shape properly (IMO) since H1.

However, honorable mention goes to Brad Loree and Dick Warlock as they did a really good job as well.

Ray, I will sock you. For the three-hundreth and final time, the Michael Myers in H20 was stronger than what he was in the original, H2, H4, H5, and H6. The physically strongest Myers to date. Understand? No Myers, and I mean none at all, from any of those sequels, took an axe head-on to the chest and shrugged it off as if it were nothing. None of them could take a several thousand pound vehicle plummeting down a cliffside, engraving them into a tree, and act as if nothing happened.

Find another bad Myers. :D

Actually, that's why I don't dig him. Myers was best in H1 because he didn't just shrug off injuries. He registered pain...but even though he was in pain, and the wounds made things more difficult, he still kept coming for you. This is why H4 is my favorite Halloween movie, but not my favorite Myers.

And because he moved more naturally in H1...and breathed heavy...and grunted. He was just fuckin' scary.

EOTL, we just went through this in the Halloween thread, didn't we? ;) I'll reiterate, though.

I don't like the Michael Myers in Halloween H20. Actually, I don't really like any of them (yes, they ARE different people) past the original film's. The Myers in H20 was confused. He had more human mannerisms than those in the previous films (head tilt, normal walk), but engrave a sharp object into him and boy he couldn't care less. It's sort of misleading. But Michael isn't what makes H20 for me... he wasn't even in it all that much, and I wasn't too bothered.

The point was, he certainly wasn't a wimp. I'm not sure why some people think that when, physically, he was his strongest.

Danielle said in the special features of H4 that Wilbur did wear padding to make him look better and I don't know about anyone else I can sure tell it. And in H6 when he turns to the side he's got a little pot belly, boy Michael sure must eat good. Wilbur is my least favorite of them all for sure. There's something about him playing Michael that rubs me the wrong way. And addressing the Don Shanks haters I don't think he was really that bad. I actually liked Don as Michael. Michael just had a real creepy presence in that movie.

Excatly. He's not trying to move in a certain way, he's just moving naturally. Because his movements are realistic and not forced he made The Shape much more believable and therefore much more frightning.

I agree but I voted for Dick Warlock because I find it harder to follow up someone's performance than to create one initially. I think Nick's performance was more realistic in the first film but Dick did a great job of keeping The Shape's movements consistant in the second installment. Although I must admit, Dick was a bit robot like...

Castle, and the 5+ other people that played him in part 1 did the best job. Wilbur is an easy second place (especially for the H6 job), with the much beloved Dick Warlock in third (ultra slow robot Myers was still better than the rest).

My question for the people of H4 is why they couldn't just hire a guy that had a bigger frame instead of a skinny guy in a noticable padded suit so he'd look bigger, man that pisses me off. I'd take Don Shanks over a guy in a padded suit any day.

I'll give you Brad cause i thought he was pretty good, and you must be crazy Chris was the closest thing to the original shape, well the only reason he got the role twice is probably cause Mr. Akkad liked H4. And George need pads to make him look better, Nick didnt need pads. In H6 michael looked like a grandfather that pumps weights, and that movie sucked. The only reason H4 was go is cause of the well written script, Mr. Akkad just got lucky with H4 and just got money hungary and the film after H4 lost thier quality. And yes thats my opinion and i'm sticking to it, why you dont like Chris.

Thank You! Finally, there's someone who agrees with me about that awful sit up he does, on the road in front of the car. That alone was one of the worst movements I had seen in ANY HalloweeN movie. I mean, watch the sit up in H1, then the one in H20 right after and you'll see what I mean.

Eh... Chris Durand was better than George Wilbur, but both are among the worst Michael's. At least with Durand, though - he looked more human-like ala the Myers from H1 and H2, and not a steroid-injected hulk Jason wanna-be. What was so great about the situp Wilbur did in H4? I'd rather take a good head-tilt than a shitty, near-nonexistent one. At least Durand didn't throw people through windows. At least Durand walked slower and tried to replicate Nick Castle in that respect. Just take a look at the scene in Halloween 6 when he's walking across the street for Kara and Danny. Study his arm movements. Absolutely nothing like Castle in the original. His arms were wailing everywhere, like a trackstar, instead of by his sides where they should've been.

He was terrible. He was nothing like Myers. I think he was the worst. Then Wilbur followed by Brad Loree. These guys all sucked. When you go back and watch the first two Halloweens and compare...it's so obvious. I thought Shanks did a good job in H5 but the mask sucked. That may have been the worst mask. But his performance was pretty good.

The ONLY Myers that really count:

Nick Castle
Dick Warlock

Tony Moran only did the scene when Laurie takes off his mask and you see his face, I believe. As for the best Michael, it's a real tough choice between Nick Castle and Dick Warlock. Well, we pretty much know the portions of the film where's it's someone other than Castle...and all of the "alternates" only wore the mask for one brief sequence each. Castle definitely portrayed the Shape throughout most of H1, and gave a far more naturalistic performance than anyone who followed. Also, he showed more aggression while killing than any of the sequel Shapes. He could go from coolly observing to murderous frenzy in an instant. The later Shapes tended to be more "static." They pretty much did everything really slowly, and didn't seem to enjoy killing as much. They showed about the same amount of enthusiasm while killing as they did while walking down a corridor.

Not to take anything away from some of the other people who played the Shape in H1, of course. I thought Wallace was quite good, in particular, and showed an appropriate amount of determination and aggression in his scene. I think he followed Nick's lead better than any of the people who donned the mask for the sequels. But mostly, H1's Shape was Nick Castle. And to me, the H1 Shape is the definitive Michael Myers.

Nick Castle, without a second thought. I can't believe the praise that Warlock receives. He didn't do anything groundbreaking. He simply did his slow, methodical, robotic walk and people place him right up there with Nick Castle. I don't think anyone who sported the mask and coveralls after Castle even came close to emulating him.

In my opinion, the second best Michael Myers was Will Sandin. I remember how overcome I was with shock upon first viewing the original Halloween and learning that Judith Myers's murder was a six year old child. Nobody else could have pulled off that blank, pale, emotionless expression!

I think Nick Castle and Dick Warlock were "the best" but I do tend to agree with your point of view about Wilbur. Halloween 4 was the first movie in the series that I saw. As for the guy being criticized for not copying Nick Castle, Wilbur himself says he never went back and watched any of the old films before taking the job. Maybe he should have or maybe it was better that he didn't. Still, he can't copy a guy that he never studied.

Nick Castle was definitely the best, he basically defined the character. I guess Dick Warlock would be my second vote; but all of them have done a decent (if not better) job.

Hands down, George Wilbur. Especially since I couldn't vote for Tyler Mane.

Castle, Warlock and Wilbur are in a 3-way tie for me.

Nick Castle for sure. All the rest are merely bad xerox copies!

I actually voted for Wilbur cuz of H4 more than H6 even though he was his most violent in H6 compared to any other HALLOWEEN film.

Indeed he is.

I have nothing against Wilbur or H4, but Castle is in what is by and large considered to be the best film of the series and certianly the most iconic, with his version of Myers being the one that the more casual fan will remember.

All of em did a good job.I like all of them for all different reasons, but if I had to pick one,I'd go with Dick Warlock. He was always the scariest to me.Followed by Don Shanks. He had a great on screen presence as The Shape and was a great sized Michael.

Nick Castle was the best Michael Myers. I thought all the guys did a good job except for George Wilbur. I never liked the way he played Myers.
