*A retarded man is unjustly accused of killing a young girl. Disguised as a scarecrow, he hides in a cornfield, only to be hunted down and shot. Later, members of the search posse are killed by a mysterious scarecrow.*
I love this movie and catch it everytime its on TV.I've seen the VHS on Ebay and have bid on it quite a few times but I always end up losing it at the last second. If this ever gets a DVD release,I'll definately be picking it up.

I remember seeing this flick when I was about 12-13 on TV. Not too shabby at all! I reccomend all horror film fanatics t give it a try. Were there ever any sequels to this movie??
Ravenheart

No, as far as I know, there was just the one movie.
Don't confuse the 1981 Dark Night of the Scarecrow with Night of the Scarecrow which was made in 95 and has a completely different story than the "message" the other tries to convey.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a cool little flick. It uses suspense and tension to build a nice creepy movie. Larry Drake is perfect as Bubba. I remember a few years ago there was some talk about making a sequel or even a remake of the film. I would love to see what they could come up with.

i thought i posted here already, i guess it was the other board. i really liked this movie though. the first time i saw it i had to change the channel because i was pretty creeped out. both amazon and half.com have used vhs for sale, but the cheapest one is about $30. seems like a title that would be perfect for anchor bay to release on dvd.

It's just plain vhs quality, a bit grainy, and the sound isn't that great either.
If you can get it cheap, pick it up. We don't know how long it will take to get a proper dvd, and you can always sell the bootleg after you get the proper dvd.

Finally! Dark Night of the Scarecrow DVD!
Now here's some truly great news. Deadpit.com's "Creepy Kentuckian" is reporting that the classic (and largely unseen by today's audiences) 1981 made-for-TV fright flick Dark Night of the Scarecrow is at long last getting the DVD treatment. About damn time!
Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a genuinely creepy horror movie about a mentally handicapped young man (Larry Drake, Dr. Giggles) wrongfully accused of assaulting a young girl in a rural farm community who is then hunted down by a lynch mob led by legendary character actor Charles Durning. The frightened simpleton tries to disguise himself as the scarecrow in his mother's field only to get gunned down in cold blood by the mob. The murderous rednecks then try to cover their tracks by putting a pitchfork in his hands and claiming self defense. They get away with it too until that night someone dressed at that scarecrow begins picking them off one-by-one with that very same pitchfork.
A more effective chiller than most of the more well known slasher flicks of the era, if it had been a theatrical release instead of a TV movie that's been fairly obscure for a quarter century I truly believe Dark Night of the Scarecrow would be widely considered one of the seminal horror films of the Eighties - except maybe amongst gorehounds who'd complain about the lack of blood and guts. Heck, a revenge tale about retards, redneck injustice, and a pitchfork-wielding killer, Rob Zombie would have probably already signed on to direct the remake by now.
VCI Entertainment is planning a special edition DVD release of Dark Night of the Scarecrow to be released around Halloween 2010. Expect to hear more about it as further details begin to emerge.
Now if only we can get The Bermuda Depths its long overdue DVD release.
Our friend RoG from I-Mockery has up a lengthy article on the film to help jolt your memories. Click here to check it out.

My brother and I watched this on youtube this week, it holds up remarkably well for a 30 year old made-for-TV movie. This was the first horror movie I ever watched and I have been hooked ever since. It's still one of my all time favorites. Glad to see it coming to DVD (and hopefully bluray). Now if we can just get an update/remake.

I am not sure if it's a tractor or a front end loader or what; but yes, the climax involves something like that.

Believe me, it's worth the wait! And it's only three and a half months away. Seems like a long time, but it's totally worth it! I just hope the DVD will be sold at a reasonable price and not something high for an old TV movie. Somthing in the range of $10-$15 sounds good to me.

I remember back in 81 or 82 whenever this movie aired on national TV they advertised this thing like crazy. Kids were psyched to see it and that is all we talked about in school. It really is a nice little film that gets you in the mood for Halloween. Great atmosphere for the Fall season. Don't expect good kills or blood. I never thought it would be out on DVD but here we are maybe a month away.

Amazon is taking pre-orders for this at $17.99. There is also a 4 minute video with the writer of the movie and he hints at a sequel. Haha, I loved the first one and it's been almost 30 years since it was made, so I have two things to say to this guy:
1. Go for it!
2. What the hell are you waiting for?
