I'll be honest and say I didn't enjoy it. I found it really boring. Nothing about it kept me interested.

You know it's not a good sign when you want the movie to be over sooner than later.

I find this to be a real good movie, but one of John Carpenter's middle efforts, not bad by any means. John Carpenter is my favorite director and most people say this was his last great movie. I beg to differ though.

The music is classic and the film has that great JC atmosphere.Sam Neil is great in this. I have the DVD and watch it every now and then.

Hey, man. Honesty is the only way to go. I, on the other hand thought it was really good.

Great movie! I really enjoyed it. Its not like a typical horror movie either. The ending totally messes w/ your head. If anybody hasn't seen go give it a whirl I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.

I really liked this movie. I think its one of Carpenters better movies.

I'm just kinda confused on the quote on the box: "The slimy things are excellent." ??? Okaaaay.

And thanks Mr.Garrett for the very interesting trivia.

Dude, I need to see it again. Because I don't remember what the hell happens.

Another totally creepy part was when he's in the cell in the beginning, and that woman's hand slowly knocks on the window.

Of course, the whole damn movie's a fright fest. I don't remember being so scared at the theatres. I was by myself, too, when I saw it the first time.

I took my mom to see it later, and it scared the piss out of her too.
Hehehe. *devil horns*

I like this move a lot, definately one of my favorites. I saw it when it first came out and I thought it was excellent. Bought the DVD awhile back and watch it often. Great movie.

Everything kicks ass. Of course, I'm also biased toward this movie for my own reasons, but it really IS a damn good flick.

Its nice tosee this because it washes the bad tast of john Carpenters "Vampires" out of your mouth. Definetly the best John Carpenter horror flick.

Rob Zombies song "In the Mouth of Madness" totally reminds me of this movie too. Its on his second Cd, track 2. I wonder if this movie inspired the song.

First off, John Carpenter is the master. Anyone who likes F13th, owes respect to Carpenter, as Sean Cunningham admitted he was trying to rip-off Halloween and make his own slasher picture. I do not hate F13th, I love it, but just saying Carpenter is reason F13th got made. But on that note, Halloween was homaging Psycho, and Hitchcock is the master of all masters.

That said. Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is quite superb. It is well crafted and takes a stab at social effect on the literary word and how people can take work too far. I was totally entertained and felt movie was well done. One of Carpenters best, next to Halloween, the Fog and Christine.

I remember seeing this in the theatre. It's a great flick. It has some great gags, and top notch acting by Sam Neil.

Thread Ressurection Alert!!

I saw parts of this movie a few years ago when my dad was watching it on HBO or one of those channels, and I liked what I saw. I then bought it a couple months back, and haven't got around to watching it until tonight...

I really enjoyed it. I thought the scariest part was When Styles get's out of the car and is walking crab-like all twisted, although it's a total Exorcist rip-off ;)
It had an amazing atmosphere throughout the whole thing. You felt almost like you were going crazy with John. The end where He is watching the movie starring himself cracking up is a classic end. I loved it. It really seems like something Stephen King would write.

Overall I was extremely impressed. Especially with the fact that some of the scenes creeped me out, which doesn't happen very often anymore.

I'm really glad you like it, Horror Kitten. This is my favorite of JC's work, besides Halloween, and many critics have deemed it his best work of the 1990s (in which I wholehartedly agree). In fact, the last time he has showed this height of creative greatness was either in 1986's Big Trouble in Little China or 1984's Starman. ITMOM actually boosted his career.

In the Mouth of Madness also has a unique feel that isn't easy to describe. From Trent's entry into the asylum to the sheer weirdness that goes on at Hobb's End, plus the awesomeness of Sutter Cane (haha, I love that guy), you can't go wrong with this one. :)

For me, it's now a tie between Mouth of Madness and Village of the Damned. I've always loved VOTD, so I'm a partial to it ;)

I know, it was really great direction from JC's part. The atmoshere is one I don't think I've ever experienced in a movie before. Really amazing.

Yes, this movie is awesome! I'm thinking about popping it in my DVD player right now. Sam Neill's performace is just great. The ending is pretty "crazy."

Awesome movie. Carpenter does Lovecraft so well, even when he's not basing a movie on Lovecraftian elements (Village of the Damned, Prince of Darkness, ITMOM).

Both ITMOM and The Ressurected are the 2 most faithful (and best) Lovecraftian movies, even if ITMOM was an original story (I also thought The Gate was great, Lovecraft for kids).

Great soundtrack too, I just got it near Christmas time. Now I only need They Live to complete my Carpenter film score collection (don't really want Vampires or Ghosts of Mars that much right now).

I can get you They Live right now if you want it. PM me about it.

BTW, I still need to pick up this movie. I used to think of it as okay, but over time it got better and better. Now it ranks pretty high on my list of Carpenter films (not that I really dislike any of his films).

Man I love this film! It's just so supremely creepy and disturbing and still has the effect on me watching it at age 23 as it did when I was 12 and caught it on VHS. It scared me sleepless then and it still unnerves me. Sam Neill gives a bravura performance, as always, and Julie Carmen and Jurgen Prochnow are so sufficiently eerie. I especially love the scene with Trent and Styles in the hotel room, discussing the books and Trent references a black church outside one of the windows, and he shows Styles that it's only a barn. And her response: "You didn't read closely enough. The view is from the east."

I find the whole blending of reality and fiction very intriguing, and when one character is about to commit suicide and says, "I have to, he wrote me this way!" my skin just crawls. Also, the whole bit with the biker in the middle of the road, and how they actually stumble across Hobbs End; just utterly creepy. It's really too bad this film flopped, it was completely undeserving of such status. I rank this with Scream and Wes Craven's New Nightmare as one of the top innovative horror films to come along in the awful horror genre of the early to mid-1990s.

John Carpenter's obvious nod to his author friend, Stephen King, and another horror writer with whom I'm sure he wishes he'd been friends, the late H.P. Lovecraft, is a pretty decent film. I don't rate it among Carpenter's best, but I do think it's the best movie he made in the '90s...or since.

Also, the DVD has one of the most delightfully bizarre commentaries I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. :yeah:
