View Full Version : Horror Icons Of The Future

Over the years, we have grown up with different icons, mainly of scary movies, superhero and action, such as Jason Voorhees one of the many icons of fear, Superman one of the icons of superheroes and the Terminator a action hero icon. But as we grow older, we ask ourselves what icons will replace our icons of today, this topic being based on icons of horror...

FRANKENSTEIN- the reanimated, slow minded walking killer was highly famous from the 1940's -60's and early 70's. Was then REPLACED by: JASON VOORHEES, who resembles Frankenstein in his features and actions only difference is Jason is more brutal.

COUT DRACULA- the undead vampire, feeds off the blood of young innocent virgins, always has a diabolical plan of dominance over someone or something. Was most famous throughout the early 30's, 40's 50's 60's 70's and spinoffs in the 80's and 90's. REPLACED by FREDDY KRUEGAR, the dream demon, feeds of the nightmares of young teenageers, always has a diabloical plan to take over reality as his own "DreamWorld."

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA- the mysterious, vengeful specter, always in the dark, the face of terror, stalks young beautiful women, terrorizes and kills anyone in his way, most famous throughout the 30's, 40's 50's, 60's and 80's. REPLACED by, MICHAEL MYERS, the inevitable force of evil, they both share the same qualities/features. Michael stalks beautiful young babysitters, stops at nothing not even bullets!

THE WOLF MAN- a man by day, but a raging half man/half wolf by night. Wasn't really as terrifying as modern versions today, he was more of a scytsophrenic case than any thing. Popular during the 60's to 8o's. REPLACED BY LEATHERFACE, a raging maniac witha chainsaw, Norman Bates, the nice guy by day, psycho by night and the modern day werewolves, much more terrifying than the early version of the "wolf-man".

THE MUMMY- a walking dead ancient pharoah from egypt, still is popular with the new "THE MUMMY" franchise. OVERPOWERED BY, THE LIVING DEAD, raging zombies back from the dead, thirsty for "braaains!"

Now all of us here grew up with JASON, FREDDY and MICHAEL MYERS. We look at Dracula, Phantom of the opera and the wolf man as classic icons, Waaaay back in the day. Now our icons are near their end, so my question is WHO WILL REPLACE JASON MICHAEL, FREDDY, ETC. Who will our Grandchildren's horror icons be?

Jason Voorheess- emerged in 1980---REPLACED BY????

Freddy Kruegar----emerged in 1984, REPLACED BY ????
MICHAEL MYERS- emerged in 1978 REPLACED BY????

THe Horror icons of the future will be a step up from ours today whats your guys guess????

Hard to tell right now seeing as how they are all still going on and not officially dead. But good observation with the old and new horror icons.

We're already at the stage where the movie that totally dissected the genre in a smart and comical way, Scream, (which was a sort of spoof on slasher movies) is being spoofed itself! (Scary Movie)...

Right now, Hollywood are resorting to remakes... so expect your fave classic horror film remade with a "new approach" and todays "hottest talent"...

Sigh... :(

This is a good question. Truth be told, we likely have yet to encounter the icons who are going to replace the ones we've grown up with. But of the new ones we've seen, I'd definitely say Ghostface is one of them. The Scream movies were big, and that mask is universally recognized now. I don't know about the Fisherman so much, he'll probably fade into obscurity. But as of right now, I think Ghostface is definitely a mainstay. Maybe the Creeper, too, depending on how far those movies go.

I think Samara after The Ring 2 comes out will become a horror icon, if she's lucky that is.

I dont even think she will be as big of a part in this one. I dont even think the little girl from the first one is in this one. I dont see he becoming an icon at all.

Idk, it's really hard to say not many BLOCKBUSTER halloween esque movies have come out in a long ass time, so once one does, it'll come in like 3's or 4's with multiple icons, note: Michael, Jason, Freddy, and Leatherface all w/in a few years of eachother.

Yeah it's an indie production. Right now they have the working Title of Black Peter.

Michael Myers 1

I would like to think that Freddy, Jason, and Michael will be known as horror icons for a very long time. I mean when you think about it, everyone still knows about Frankinstein, Dracula, and The Phantom of the Opera. They are still horror icons, just they dont have any good movies out, and as one of you said before, remakes. So i think that in the future, all 3 will still be known well, but they will not still have the thrown as the kings.

I like the Creeper. I think it was a very original idea. I see him as one of our future horror icons. Ghostface as well. But the Scream movies took a downward spiral after the first one. Scream is a good film on it's own.

by the way, i just want to add, in no way am i trying to undermine the beloved postions of our horror idols, im just trying to help pass on the torch. i doubt michael will be able to do much other than collect social security when my kids are old enough to see horror movies. and even though jason is set for the next 500 years, the world of horror needs something new and fresh.

hey no one can replace michael, they will just inherit his thrown when he retires. and even retiring is too big to say, consider michael's future absence, just stepping out of the spot light for another act.

Sadako from the Ring

She has 2 very brief scenes. There is a planned prequel that explains her origins though. That will most likely happen, assuming The Ring 2 isn't a pretty big bomb.

The Creeper is by far the most franchiseable character to come out in recent memory. Quite a few people hate his films, but he still has a big enough fan-base to make a name for himself in the genre.

I think Ghostface already is an icon, almost everybody I know, horror buffs and people that don't care about the genre one bit alike seem to recognize that mask perfectly, and practically everyone has heard of Scream. The same applies to Ben Willis. The name obviously isn't as well known to the masses as Jason, Freddy, Michael, Chucky, etc... but few people haven't heard of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and most know it centers around a hook-handed a killer. I really would like to see him atleast get a trilogy sooner or later. I think he's a great, and extremely underrated character.

samara is done for, unfortunately we're stuck with ghost face and ben willis. doesnt that suck? and forget riddick. hes close to snake but he doesnt stand for half of what snake stands for. snake is the all american "do it my own way" guy. he doesnt care about your rules, your laws or your politics. he just wants to live his life with out being bothered.

we also have trevor moorehouse, remember the bastard amalgamation of michael, jason and leatherface? i guess if someone with half a brain does the next BLOODY MURDER movie, it might bump that poor sap up a few notches on the horror icon ranks.

also what about the scarecrow. you can pick any movie with a scarecrow in it, they are all rather creepy. i kinda liked NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW

The fact that we never see the Blair Witch seems to make it a little hard for her/it to become an icon, though.

And the Scarecrow...that makes me laugh.

Blinky500
10-18-2004, 08:46 PM
bah, scarecrows are cool. forget "scarecrow slayer" and "jack-o" i think you can make a scarecrow into a genuine horror icon. after all, they really cant die, there are so many of them, plus its halloween oriented. what more can you ask for?

although im still expecting great things from THE SANTA SLASHER

I love tons of characters, I'm not as biased toward the Creeper as opposed to other horror villains as you may think.;)
He is easily the most franchiseable character in the genre within the past few years(and this refers to the killer's potential to be a franchise character, not just what's here thus far).
Notice I said, "in recent memory," can you suggest a character that's come out lately with more franchise potential.
I fail to see what the IKWYDLS comment has to do with anything by the way.

Sadako from The Ring has already pulled a Halloween, and has been copied alot recently! Every ghost movie u watch these days, there's always a little girl with hair covering her face! The Grudge, Fear.Com, Gothika.......she even appears in the game Fatal Frame 2!!!!
I liked The Ring, and even tho I'm gettin' sick of seein' Sadako clones, I'll still like The Ring, because.........it's original, LOL...

I liked Jeepers Creepers! The beginning reminded me of that movie Duel, Stephen Spielberg's first movie!! The sequel was pretty cool too.

that ghost girl with the hair covering her face is a typical japanese ghost,it belongs to japanese folklore.
When a girl/woman dies often her ghost is rappresented that way.You can see that ghost in the game Silent Hill 4 too.

To tell you the truth I only see one that could make it and that's The Creeper (Jeepers Creepers) If JC 3 (when and if) is any good then it'll be a good start for that series. Ghostface (Scream) would've been great if there was only 1 killer from day one.

Right now I really can't see a new horror icon, someone who can take the place of Michael,Jason,Freddy and Pinhead.
It's not that easy coming out with something new and often every new maniac has too much in common with those guys

Cruel Intentions

Ghostface- with Scream starting only 8 years ago and there getting ready for a 4th right now. He will soon be as icoonic as the rest

Jigsaw- If they continue to make the SAW movies he could turn into something bigger than he was destined to be.

The Fishermen- If they get off the damn whole batch off new teens thing and get back on the Jennifer Love Hewitt storyline and add some more story Fishermen could retire a ledgend.

Other than that all the elements of horror have been taken according to hollywood. Dreams, Halloween itself, and camp. It'll be a while until another phonominal slasher comes.

Wow, that's some interesting piece of trivia........but I'm talkin' about movies like Gothika, and Fear.com.......showed more face than Sadako, but still, lol...........

And even if it is tradition, it still counts as a ripoff from The Ring, when they made that ghost lady for The Grudge.....lol

But no matter what she looked like, I still wouldn't like it better than Ringu so.........meh, whatever, LOL

I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer sounds like total shit. Cashing in on another forgotten set of movies and probably not even doing it successfully.

Ghostface has no future as the icon because of the way they portray him. I'm not saying the mask isn't scary, but the people behind the mask are lacking.

If I could make a horror icon, it'd be much like The Devil's Rejects without the whining they did near the end of the movie.
